Monday's Blog from Camp Casey

Monday, August 22, 2005  1000 words As my photographs are not likely to win the Pulizter Prize anytime soon, I suggest you visit the blog of a wonderful photographer from Alaska who's been at Camp Casey since Thursday. Kim Terpening's photos need no words-- they most definitely speak for themselves.

# posted by Emily Sharpe @ 21:02     Mail call! The mail keeps rolling in for Cindy, military families and others at the Crawford Peace House! The USPS, FedEX and UPS are now frequent visitors. Volunteers, like the two pictured above, donate their time and energy to sorting through the slew of postcards, letters and packages. To those who have sent chocolate chip cookies: we thank you for your generosity, but unfortunately the beautiful treats you baked most often arrive on our doorstep a crumbled, gooey mess. If you are inclined to baking, we've found that dense breads hold up well ;)

p.s. I'm currently writing this post under the big tent at Camp 2-- that's right, our genius volunteer IT people have set up wireless access for us here! Gotta love modern technology...

# posted by Emily Sharpe @ 17:25     From Crawford, TX to Boise, ID: Gold Star Families Follow Bush to Demand Answers on War in Iraq

Press Release:

Idahoans tell the President…

"Mr. Bush, Every Town Has a Cindy and Casey"

Tuesday Noon Dedication of Iraq War Memorial to Feature Comments from Military Mom and War Widow

Boise, ID, Tuesday, August 23, 12:00 pm: While President Bush is mountain biking 100 miles north of Boise Tuesday, local citizens opposed to the Iraq war and supporting the efforts of Gold Star mother Cindy Sheehan will gather in downtown Boise at 12:00 noon to dedicate a memorial to the Iraq War.

The gathering will feature remarks from Gold Star wife Melanie House of Simi Valley, CA, the 27-year-old widow of Petty Officer 3rd Class John House, who was killed in Iraq on January 27, 2005; and, Laura McCarthy, the mother of a soldier serving in the Army National Guard's 116th Calvary Brigade in Iraq.

The Iraq War Memorial in Boise consists of small white crosses or stakes for the more than 1,860 U.S. service members who have died thus far in the Iraq War. Military families and veterans in Idaho would like answers to some of the same questions Ms. Sheehan has asked while waiting to meet with the President outside of his ranch in Crawford, Texas including: What is this noble cause for which the President sent our nation and our troops to war?

Cindy Sheehans television ad, which has run in Waco, TX and Salt Lake City, UT, will follow the President to Boise, pending approval by local ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX affiliates.

Who: Gold Star wife Melanie House; military mother Laura McCarthy; military family members; veterans; supporters

What: Public gathering dedicating Iraq War Memorial

When: Tuesday, August 23, 2005; 12:00 noon

Where: Capitol Park, Downtown Boise; 601 W Jefferson St., Boise (Across from Statehouse; near intersection of W Jefferson St and N 6th St.)
