I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,

We must never forget who gets the credit for the freedoms we have, of which we should be eternally grateful.

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.

A young Soldier saluted it,
And then he stood at ease..

 

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers' tears?
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd.

 

How many pilots' planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were Soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant 'Amen,'

When a flag had draped a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

 

 

thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives.

I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea

Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free

America will set another world record for longevity, having passed 232 years under the same governing document! While other nations average a revolution every twenty or thirty years, America continues to remain stable. Neither our closest allies nor our fiercest enemies have experienced the stability with which we have been blessed.

Some describe this accomplishment as "American Exceptionalism" -- a term coined in 1831 by Alexis De Tocqueville, a famous French visitor to America who declared:

The position of the Americans is quite exceptional, and it may be believed that no democratic people will ever be placed in a similar one.

This description is not an indication of American superiority; on the contrary, as President John Adams observed, it should always be a source of national humility:

It must be felt that there is no national security but in the nation's humble acknowledged dependence upon God and His overruling Providence.

American Exceptionalism is the result not only of distinctive ideas set forth in the Declaration and secured in the Constitution but it is especially the result of the blessing of God -- a fact recognized and acknowledged from generation to generation:

. . . recommend a general and public return of praise and thanksgiving to Him from whose goodness these blessings descend. The most effectual means of securing the continuance of our civil and religious liberties, is always to remember with reverence and gratitude the source from which they flow.
