Granny Carter's Picture Page

Here are some of the long awaited for pictures of Granny Carter.  Thanks to one of her beautiful granddaughter, Rose Estelle Carter-Jones.  I call her Peanut.  Love you my sweet girl for sharing not only the pictures of Granny Carter but your love for her as well.

Mary, has already gone home to be with God.  The other two daughters, Virginia, and Alma, I am sorry to say I don't have any pictures of.

Next I will be adding some grand children and great grand children.  Again the only pictures I have are my children and their children.  I do have a couple of Peanut, her baby girl, Dorothy and Dorothy's son, Mookey to be added.

Right now have to clean house.

Please keep checking back.  Will be adding pictures now that Frances is out of the "picture."

These words from "Jennie," a great grand daughter of Granny Carter, as well as being named after her.  "The one thing that I remember most about being around Granny is the love that I always felt."  What a great testimony.  Thank you Jennie.

Notes for George Washington Barber:
From: Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia (vol.9)
George Washington Barber was born about November 5, 1842. There are several descrepancies recorded about his date of birth. The Barber Family Bible and his tombstone give the date of birth as November 5, 1842. George Washington Barber was probably born in Barnwell District, South Carolina, the son of John Barber and his wife, Anne Gills. The family was listed in the 1840 and 1850 Census of Barnwell District, South Carolina. George was listed as age 12 which should have made him born about 1838. The Barnwell County, South Carolina Census of 1860, Allendale Section, Household #805 lists George's mother, Anne Barber, Samuel Barber (Philip Samuel to us), age 14, and Ephraim Barber, age 12. George Barber, age 17, was living in Household #802 in the home of W.M. Bonnett.
George Washington Barber enlisted in the military service of the CSA, Company "B", 63rd Georgia Infantry at Thunderbolt, Georgia, near Savannah, August 1, 1862. He selected this particular company because he had a brother-in-law, George W. Stone, already enlisted there. He was wounded at Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia. He was wounded again in another battle and was honorably discharged near Richmond, Virginia in the latter part of April, 1865, due to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee.
Following his discharge from the army, George Washington Barber accompanied one of his Army friends to his home in Pierce County, Georgia. In June 1865, George Washington Barber married Jane Carroll, daughter of his Army friend, Archibald Carroll and his wife Elizabeth "Betsey" Rowell. They remained in Georgia for three years and then moved to Florida where they lived in Nassau and Duval Counties.
Jane Carroll Barber was born September 7, 1845. She died April 4, 1921 and is buried at Jones Cemetery in Callahan, Florida. Her tombstone reads "Mrs. G.W. Barber". George Washington Barber died May 7, 1927 and is also buried at Jones Cemetery and his grave is marked.

Notes for Phillip Samuel and Margaret Joyner Barber:

Notes for Phillip Samuel Barber:
From The Roster of Confederate Soldiers Vol 2, pg 146:
P.S. Barbre (Barber)
Company I, 11th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry
Army of Northern Virginia CSA Randolph County GA, ("Quitman Greys")
Private, Dec 1, 1862. Wounded and disabled at Gettysburg, Pa July 2, 1863 (2nd day). Admitted to General Hospital #9 at Richmond, Virginia October 28, 1863; to Ocmulgee Hospital at Macon, Georgia December 17,1864, and transferred January 11,1865. No later record.
According to 1880 Census (Wayne County - Jesup, GA) he was born in SC along with two Barber neighbors (probably brothers) also from SC. The entries look as follows:

the PS and his family. His age is 31 and Maggie's 35 according to the census. This doesn't match what I have. P.S. died 7/21/1921 and according to his Obit. he was 75 years old. According to 1860 census (see below) the Samuel living in Anne Barber's household was age 14. This matches the age quoted in his obit. 1921 - 75 = 1846. 1846 + 14 = 1860. This helps confirm the Samuel was P.S. when coupled with the fact that he was living next to G.W. and Ephraim in the 1880 census.

From article in Waycross Journal Herald Monday, 10/10/1938:
The Rev. W.L. Barber last night was ordained as pastor of the Crawford Street Baptist Church, following his acceptance a week ago of the call extended by the congregation of that church.
The impressive ordination rites were held at the Second Baptist CHurch, of which Mr. Barber has been a member for a number of years, congregations of the Second Baptist and Crawford Street churches uniting in the service.
The ordination sermon was delivered by the Rev. J. Carlton Shepard, former pastor of the Crawford Street Church, who talked on "Service". The charge to the pastor was delivered by the Rev. J. R. Bowen of Pierce county, and the charge to the congregation was presented by the Rev. C.M. Hart. The Bible was tendered by the Rev. I.T. Sweat; the ordination prayer was J. Lestor Johnson, and the hand of fellowship by the Rev. Mr. A.J. Harper, pastor of Second Baptist.
The Rev. Mr. Barber, mechanical superintendent for the Waycross Journal-Herald for a number of years, has been an active churchman for a long period, having devoted his interests largely to mission and evangelistic work throughout the rural areas of Southeast Georgia. He was warmly commended last night for his unselfish service and devotion to the cause of the church.

Granny Carter was born Jennie Candacy and when she was older she had her middle name legally changed to Estelle. Family oral history, says Granny Carter was born in Jasper, and Grandpa Carter, was born in Georgia. Grandpa Carter saw Granny Carter walking down the street of Jasper and told the man he was riding with he was going to marry that woman and he did. Granny Carter said that not only was he her husband but the very best friend that she had ever had. (ljg)
