CAPTAIN ALLEN DANIEL  1738

Descendants of Captain Allen Daniel

Generation No. 1

 1.  CAPTAIN ALLEN1 DANIEL was born 1738 in Prince George's County, Virginia, and died 1814 in Madison County, Georgia.  He married MARY ALLEN.  She was born 1743 in Virginia, and died Unknown in Madison County, Georgia.   Notes for CAPTAIN ALLEN DANIEL:
Capt. Allen Daniel "appears in theWilkes County records as early as 1788. In 1789, William Allen bought land on Beaverdam Creek from William and Nancy Daniel with Allen Daniel as a witness."   OUR FAMILY, THE DANIELS states that he "came to Elbert County., Ga from Prince Georges County., Virginia, in 1785,with his two brothers, John O.Daniel, Jr., and David Daniel. The two latter settled in Moss District, Elbert County, near Carpenter Mill. Capt. Allen Daniel settled in that part of Elbert County. now known as Madison County." He commanded a Company in the 8th Regiment of Virginia. He died in Madison County where he had held important civil offices. Numerous descendants have used the military record of Capt. Allen Daniel, 8th Regiment to establish membership in the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution. A deed of record in Madison County states, "being a part of a 287-acre tract granted to Allen Daniel..." (Deed Record Book F., Page 185). This is a Bounty Grant and is recognized as proof of Revolutionary War Service for Georgia.   Capt. Allen Daniel married Mary Allen in Virginia, and when he came to Georgia and settled in Madison County, he brought with him grown children, among them Allen Daniel, Charity
Daniel, Elizabeth Daniel & others.   Allen Daniel was a Caption in the 8th Virginia Line Regiment during the American Revolution. He came from Prince Georges County, Virginia, and appears in Wilkes County, Georgia, as early as 1788. In 1789 he witnessed William Allen a (kinsman) purchasing land on Beaverdam Creek from William and Nancy Daniel. He settled in
that part of Elbert County on Scull Shoal or Bluestone Creek now, known as Madison county, Georgia. Captain Allen Daniel and his son, General Allen Daniel, are often confused in the literature of this time and area.   The history of Danielsville, Gedorgia, states that it was named for General Allen Daniel, Captain Allen Daniel's son. Danielsville, Georgia, is the county seat of Madison County which was established Dec. 5, 181. 1 Danielsville was incorporated Nov. 27,
1817. Madison county was formed with 281 square miles taken mostly from the counties of Elbert and Franklin but with small amounts taken from Clarke, Jackson and Oglethorpe counties.   GENERAL Allen Daniel from Virginia and others settled on the Scull Shoal and Bluestone creeks about 1789 or 1790. Most settlers in Madison County were from Pennsylvania and were of Scotch-Irish descent. (The Daniel family is believed to be of English descent. Daniel is an English family name in Lancaster in 1623 including a William Daniel born about 1651 but there is no clear tie to ANY American Daniel.)    Diane Carrington Bradford   More About MARY ALLEN:

Generation No. 2   2.  GENERAL ALLEN2 DANIEL (CAPTAIN ALLEN1) was born 1772 in Virginia, and died 1836 in Danielsville, Madison County, Georgia.  He married MARY "POLLY" JONES 1792.  She was born 1770 in Virginia, and died June 15, 1858 in Danielsville, Madison County, Georgia.   Notes for GENERAL ALLEN DANIEL:
General Allen Daniel "was a man of intelligence and of popular manners, and had represented Elbert County in the Legislature before the formation of Madison County, and when the new county was made, the county site [sic] was named in his honor. He sat in the State Legislature for many years, afterwards as the Senator of Madison."   Allen Daniel held the rank of Brigadier General, 1st Brigade, 4th Division, Dec 8,1807- Nov 9, 1812; Major General, 4th Division, Georgia Militia. Nov 9, 1812- Nov 20, 1817 resigned.
He was a soldier in the War of 1812. His letter of resignation follows:   Madison County 20th November 1817   Sir:   The honorable termination of the late war and the United States being at peace with all nations on Earth it promises tranquility to this Country for many years. You will therefore receive this communication as my resignation of the Command which I have the honor to hold as Major General of the fourth Division of the Militia of this State of Georgia, the Legislature being now in Session composed of a number of our fellow citizens with whom I have had the honor to associate for many years in the most perilous times and if differences have arisen in our deliberations, it is not more than might have been expected in the then situation of the Country and I have the consolation confidently to believe that whatever differences might have existed, it was only an honest difference of opinion and that the whole aimed for the prosperity and happiness of our beloved Country and I should do injustice to my feelings if I was in this communication to omit to present to the legislature of Georgia my grateful acknowledgements for this mark of their confidence in confiring on me this high and honorable command. I think this a fit occasion to congratulate the legislature of Georgia and my fellow citizens generally on the honorable termination of the late war, the happy and flourishing condition of these United States the envy of the Tyrant, an assylum for the oppressed, the pride and glory of freemen. I have the consolation to believe that in the late contest the citizens of the United States has taught the world this lesson that it is for freemen alone to prescribe bounds beyond which despots must not approach.   I have the honor to be very Respectfully, your Excellencys Most Obedient & very humble Serv. His Excellency Wm. Rabun Allen Daniel     General Allen Daniel is buried in a pasture on the south side of Georgia highway number 281 from Danielsville to Royston, approximately 6 miles north of Danielsville. His grave is marked with a massive granite marker having Inscriptions for him and his wife. The road leads to a place long known as Daniel's Ferry at the Broad River, in Georgia Militia District 438. 5

Event: Background
Note: Allen Daniel was named for his father. To distinguish between the two, the father was called Capt. Allen Daniel and the son was called Gen. Allen Daniel. He was a Tax Receiver at 23 and a State Representative starting at 29 years old . He was in his 40's when he was a General in the War of 1812's and in his fifty's in 1822 as Speaker of the House. He was often the jury foreman (1812 to as late as 1830) and was a Justice of the Inferior Court as late as 1828. Despite this, records show he was found mentally incompetent in 1832 and James Daniel was appointed Guardian. Another son, Russell J. Daniel, posted a bond of $6,000 for his father and moved to his father's home where he lived for 6 years until his father's death six years later at sixty-six years old. He was buried in sight of the home in which he lived and died and where his wife lived until his death. His grave was "100 yards to the right of the road." The unique headstones were of rough native granite and were believed to be cut by slave labor. Today the grave is in a small thicketed fenced area in the middle of a pasture on the south side of Georgia Highway 281. It is on the right hand side of the road about 6 1/2 miles north of Danielsville, Georgia Militia District 438. The grave is marked by a massive granite marker with inscriptions (About 8-9 feet tall). The road leads to a bridge about a 100 yards north of the old Daniel's Ferry on the Broad River.   THE HISTORY OF MADISON COUNTY, GEORGIA states, "In 1832 the Inferior Court found Gen. Allen Daniel mentally incompetent and appointed his son James Daniel Guardian with another son, Russell J., furnishing a bond of $6,000. Judge William H. Crawford signed the order. General Allen Daniel died six years later."   Listed in 1820 Madison County Census, p 43 as head of household.

More About GENERAL ALLEN DANIEL:
Burial: Daniel Family Cemetery , Madison County, Georgia   Notes for MARY "POLLY" JONES:
According to Madison County Cemetery Book, the year of death could be 1853 or 1858. The tombstone stated she was 79 when she died. However, the 1850 Madison County Census (#632, p 151) listed her as living with her daughter, Nancy Daniel Strickland and her husband, Ephriam P. Strickland; listed her age as 80 in 1850; and stated she was born in Virginia. She was buried beside her husband, Gen. Allen Daniel, 6 1/2 miles North of Danielsville, Georgia Militia District 438. 4 1 3

The book OUR FAMILY, THE DANIELS stated on page 5 that Mary Jones was the daughter of Russell Jones, a Revolutionary War soldier who died before 1828 when his Will was probated as a resident of Franklin County, Georgia, and was filed in Jackson County Georgia, Book A, page 152. "The deed of Mary 'Polly' Jones is recorded in Madison County Deed Book F, page 189-190."   Mary's family lived in Franklin County Georgia. Her son, James Daniel married an Elizabeth Jones from Franklin County, Georgia (his first cousin). Her grandson, George Crawford Daniel, married the daughter of Harriet Jones (his second cousin).   When Madison county was formed in 1811, Thomas L. Jones was sheriff of Elbert County but his residence was in Madison County. He was given a residence waiver for the year ( or term ?). Part of Elbert county formed the eastern part of what became Madison and adjacent Franklin Counties; and parts of Franklin County constituted the northern quarter of the newly formed Madison County.

The HISTORY OF ELBERT COUNTY indicated that General Allen Daniel "...married Mary Jones, born 1774 and died 1814, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Jones." However, these birth and death dates did not match those on the tombstone for Mary Jones Daniel who is buried beside her husband in Madison County, Georgia. 5 3   The book OUR FAMILY, THE DANIELS stated on page 5 that Mary Jones was the daughter of Russell Jones, a Revolutionary War soldier who died before 1828 when his Will was probated as a resident of Franklin County, Georgia, and was filed in Jackson County Georgia, Book A, page 152.
