Education: Graduated from Swainsboro High School. He attended the University of Georgia in Athens, where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.
Occupation: He studied law in the office of and under the guidance of Colonel John R. Powell, Jr., of Swainsboro for three months and then passed the State Bar Examination at the age of eighteen. After receiving his law degree, he became Associated with Colonel Felix Williams and they formed the law firm of Williams and Smith. He is a former president of the Swainsboro Jaycees in 1943 and former State President of the Georgia Jaycees in 1944.

Dess Smith, III, son of Dr. Henry Wilder Smith, Sr., MD, sent the following e-mail message dated Friday, August 16, 2002 8:20 PM, to various relatives including Diane Carrington Bradford "Everyone: Daddy passed away last night [Thursday , Aug 15, 2002] around 8:05 PM at he Doctor's Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. All his children and twenty more of his family were there in his ICU room to be with him when he made his trip to heaven to be with all of his family that had passed away ahead of him. What a "Glorious" reunion that must have been. Daddy wanated to be at home until his funeral, so probably sometime this afternoon he will be at his home on North Main Street until the funeral Sunday Afternoon. I'm not sure of the rest of the arrnagements yet, but will let you know as oon as possible. I wish taht I could have called each and everyone of you.
