It then included all the territory from the Cherokee Corner, north, extending from the Ogeechee to the Oconee, south to Liberty County. In 1786 a portion of it was added to Greene; in 1793, a part to Hancock; in 1807, a part to Baldwin; in 1811, a part to Laurens; and in 1812 and 1826, more to Baldwin. The streams are the Oconee, Ogeechee, and Ohoopee, besides a number of creeks. Fine burrstone [a tough limestone once used for millstones] is abundant. Near Saundersville [Sandersville] are five or six lime-sinks, or caves, in which fossil teeth, ribs, and shells of endless variety are gathered in almost any quantity. Saundersville is the capital, 28 miles east of Milledgeville. The climate is moderate. The instances of longevity which have come to our knowledge are, Wm RACHEL, who died at the age of 118 years; Mr. BEDGOOD, at 112; Mr. PEACOCK, 85; Elisabeth HANSON, 93; Wm WILLIAMS, 86; Thomas LOVE, 90; and Mr. John JOURDON, a Revolutionary soldier, at a very advanced age. Major Nicholas CURRY died in this county, aged 67. He entered the Revolutionary army a private soldier, and left it with the rank of Captain of Dragoons, after a hard service of five years. During that period he shared in many of the perils and hardships of the war, and was always active and efficient upon the field of battle. Among the early settlers of this county were Alexander IRWIN, John RUTHERFORD, Wm JOHNSON, Elisha WILLIAMS, Jared IRWIN, Jacob DENNARD, John ROBERTSON, Joseph BEDDINGFIELD, Philemon FRANKLIN, Aaron SINQUEFIELD, Joseph AVENT, John SHEPPARD, Jas. THOMAS, John DANIEL, William IRWIN, Joshua WILLIAMS, Samuel SINQUEFIELD, Benjamin TENNILLE, John MARTIN, John BURNEY, Hugh LAWSON, John SHELLMAN, Wm SAPP, Miles MURPHY, John JONES, John H. MONTGOMERY, John STOKES, Mr. SAUNDERS, John IRWIN, James THOMAS, George GALPHIN, John DENNIS, John NUTT, D. WOOD, Geo. FLUKER, Wm WARTHEN, Jacob KELLY, and Wm MAY. The first Superior Court for this county was held on the 22nd day of May, 1787, his Honor Hanry OSBORNE, Judge.
Names of the Grand Jurors: Alexander IRWIN, Foreman
Elisha WILLIAMS
Wm JOHNSON
Philemon FRANKLIN
John ROBERTSON, Sen.
John BURNEY
John MARTIN
James THOMAS
Benj. Its first settlers were Revolutionary War veterans, who were given land grants for their service to the country. Washington County lost its courthouse to fire in 1855 and 1864. Washington County is the "Kaolin Capital of the World." One of Georgia's most important minerals, kaolin is a white, alumina-silicate clay used in hundreds of products. Two of Georgia's governors called Washington County home: Jared Irwin and Thomas W.

7. GEORGE LEE3 MASON (JOHN F2, GEORGE1) was born October 25, 1842 in Georgia, and died November 21, 1885 in Washington County, Georgia. He married MAYME VANDELLA "MARY" SMITH September 26, 1872 in Swainsboro, Emanuel County, Georgia, daughter of BENJAMIN SMITH and DORIANN ROUNTREE. She was born September 08, 1854 in Swainsboro, Emanuel County, Georgia, and died September 25, 1935 in Swainsboro City Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia.

  Notes for GEORGE LEE MASON:
Dr. George Lee Mason, 1842-1885
An 1869 graduate of the Medical College at Soule University in Galveston, Texas, George returned to Washington County, Georgia, where he practiced medicine quite proficiently and also managed a successful mercantile business. After a few years he abandoned the medical profession and devoted himself to managing several plantations and his mercantile affairs. Alt. Birth 2 Dec 1845 Washington County, Georgia
This is the date that was on George Lee Mason's tombstone in Young Family Cemetery and is now on his tombstone in Swainsboro City Cemetery. However, this was NOT the birth date written in the George Lee Mason family Bible, nor on a list of family names and dates that was handwritten by George's wife, Mayme Vandella "Mary" (Smith) Mason Bridges Census Report Census/Tax 1860 Washington County, Georgia
On the 1860 Washington County, Georgia, Census, two additional people were listed as living in household 42l with William and Lizzie Irwin and their children. One was a George W. Massey, age 52, a merchant who was born in North Carolina. He might have been a relative of William Irwin or just a boarder. George Massey was also listed in the 1850 Washington County Census, household 47, family 47, as age 43 and a planter. No one else was listed with him in that household, an indication that he was not married, probably never had been, and he had no children. 22 421 413 Massey George W. 52 M Merchant 1,000 1,700 NC
23 421 413 Massey* George L. 17 M GA The second addtional person listed immediately after George W. Massey in the Irwin home in 1860 was a George L. Massey, age 17, who was born in Georgia. Were this truly a child of George W. Massey, he would have been listed in the 1850 Census with George W. Massey. However, either the census taker or the transcriber of the original census records incorrectly used the surname of Massey for the 17-year-old George L. This was actually George Lee Mason*, as substantiated by the following: 1. George L. Mason was born in October of 1842 so would have been 17 years old in 1860, a minor. 2. George L. Mason and his younger brother, James Daniel Mason, were the sons of Nancy Ann Daniel Mason, the deceased sister of Sarah A. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Daniel Irwin. 3. Nancy Ann Daniel Mason died in June of 1846, probably in childbirth when James Daniel Mason was born. Her husband, John F. Mason, died January 11, 1848, leaving George L. Mason and James Daniel Mason minor orphans. 4. On Nov 4, 1849, Silas L. Daniel, a brother of Nancy Ann Daniel Mason and Lizzie Daniel Irwin, was appointed guardian of orphans George Lee Mason and James Daniel Mason. That guardianship apparently lasted until Silas L. Daniel died in Oct, 1858. Silas Daniel's brother, Sampson Daniel, and his step-mother, Elizabeth H. Daniel, filed for letters of administration for the estate of Silas L. Daniel on Oct 27, 1858. On that same date in Washington County, Sampson Daniel filed for guardianship of James Daniel Mason (then age 12), but not of George Lee Mason (then age 16). 5. On Nov 1, 1858 William Irwin was appointed guardian of orphan of John F. Mason, viz: George L. Mason. On Dec 5, 1858 Sampson Daniel was appointed guardian of orphan, James D. Mason. Recorded: MASON, John F. Estate. Johnson County, Georgia. L/G, Vol. A (1852-1890). 6. The obituary of Dr. George Lee Mason, which appeared in a Washington County, Georgia newspaper on Thursday, January 28, 1886, clearly stated that "...he went to live with the family of his aunt and uncle, Mrs. and Col. William A. Irwin, at the well known Irwin's Cross Roads, where most of his school years were spent...." Military Service 12 Aug 1861 Washington County, Georgia
George served in the military enlisting as a private in Co. E, 1st Regiment, "Washington Rifles" (Ramsey's), Georgia Volunteer Infantry, CSA, on Aug 12, 1861 in Washington County, Georgia. He was mustered out at Augusta, Ga. March 18, 1862. He enlisted again as a private in Co. F, 62nd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry on September 1, 1863. Transferred to Co. F, 8th Regiment Georgia Cavalry July 11, 1864. Wounded in 1864. Absent, wounded, August 31, 1864. No later record. [quoted from the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System Web Site {http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/regiments.htm}] 1st Regiment, Georgia Infantry (Ramsey's) 1st (Ramsey's) Volunteers Infantry Regiment ws formed at Macon, Georgia, in April, 1861. The men were raised in the towns and cities of Newnan, Perry, Augusta, Sandersville, Atlanta, Bainbridge, Quitman, Dahlonega, and Columbus. After being stationed at Pensacola it moved to Virginia, served under R.S. Garnett and H.R. Jackson, then during Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign was attached to General D.S. Donelson's Brigade. In December, with a force of 918 officers and men, it was sent to Winchester and later Lynchburg. The regiment was soon ordered to Macon and mustered out of service. However, many of the men joined the 12th Georgia Artillery Battalion and other Georgia commands. Colonel James N. Ramsey, Lieutenant Colonel Goerge H. Thompson, and Major James W. Anderson were its field officers. Military 12 Aug 1863 Washington County, Georgia
The following notice appeared in the local newspaper on Aug 12, 1863: WASHINGTON COUNTY CAVALRY
"Members of the above organized company, whose names are hereto attached, will meet at Sandersville regularly every Saturday, until further notice, at 10 o'clock a.m., precisely, for drill, or they will be dealt with according to law. By order of the Captain R. While he may indeed have visited his uncle and stayed in his home between school sessions, he probably actually lived on or near the university campus since his Uncle Jasper lived first in Austin County and later in LaSalle County, but was not known to have ever lived in Galveston County, Texas. Census Report Census/Tax 1870 Washington County, Georgia
ensus Yr: 1870 Territory: GA County: Washington Div.: Tennille Reel: M593-182 Page: 200B
REFERENCE: Enumerated 7 June, 1870 by Henry A. TC 11-22-1885 From: The Constitution, Atlanta, 1885-1887 Death Note 26 Nov 1885 Washington County, Georgia
The following brief notice appeared in the local newspaper on Nov 26, 1885: DIED Dr. George L. Mason died of paralysis on Saturday last, at his residence, eight miles south of Tennille. Obituary 28 Jan 1866 Washington County, Georgia
Died at his residence in this county on the 21st of November, 1885, of paralysis of the brain, after an illness of not quite two days, Dr. George L. Mason, aged 40 [sic; he was actually 42] years. He was the son of John and Nancy Mason, the latter being a sister of Judge Samson [sic] and Mr. Silas Daniel. When not quite four years old he was left an orphan, both of his parents having died within two years of each other. His uncle, the late Mr. Silas Daniel, became his guardain, who with his estimable wife (now Mrs. Moreau) bestowed upon him the affections and care of parents. After the lapse of a few years, he went to live with the family of his aunt and uncle, Mrs. and Col. William A. Irwin, at the well known Irwin's Cross Roads, where most of his school years were spent. When the tocsin [sic] of war sounded he joined the 38th Georgia Regiment, where he served faithfully until the surrender. Returning home he opened a mercantile business at the Cross Roads, but finding the occupation not genial at that time, he left for Texas, where he attended medical lectures, and graduated from the Medical College at Galveston in 1869. Returning soon after again to his old home in Georgia he assumed the practice of medicine in which he became quite proficient, and also resumed the mercantile business, in which he was to a great degree successful. In 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary V. Smith, the accomplished daughter of Dr. B. D. Smith, now of Forsyth. After a few years abandoning the medical profession, he devoted himself to the management of several plantations, and to his mercantile affairs until death claimed him as his own. Burial Site
When George died in 1885, he was originally buried in the Young Family Cemetery in Washington County, Georgia. In the 1970s, one of his grandsons, Ted Coatland Mason, had George's remains disinterred, moved to the Swainsboro City Cemetery in Emanuel County and reburied beside his wife, Mayme Vandella "Mary" (Smith) Mason Bridges. The birthdate listed on the tombstone is the same as was on the stone in the Young Family Cemetery (that stone was left behind when the remains were moved.) However, that birth date might be incorrect. George's great granddaughter, Diane Carrington Bradford, has in her possession an old list of Mason/Smith family names and dates that was handwritten by George's wife, Mayme Vandella "Mary" (Smith) Mason Bridges, as well as a photocopy of the George Lee Mason Family Bible pages. Both sources list Dr. George Lee Mason's birth date as October 1842. Diane Carrington Bradford
More About GEORGE LEE MASON:
Burial: Swainsboro City Cemetery, Emanuel County, Georgia
Cause of Death: brain tumor Notes for MAYME VANDELLA "MARY" SMITH:
Mary attended the old Monroe Female Academy, which was later renamed Bessie Tift College, then Tift College. ( The school was bought by Mercer University in the 1970s and closed.) She had to quit school within three months of completing her courses and graduating when her mother became ill WEDDING NOTICE Through the courtesy of Dr. and Mrs. B. D. Smith of this county, I've had the pleasure of being present on Thursday last at the marriage celebration of their accomplished daughter, Mary, and Dr. George L. Mason. The marriage ceremony was performed in an impressive manner by the Rev. Dr. Hillyer, Prof. of Belles Lettres of Monroe Female College, who with his amiable lady, had specially come down to grace the occasion, the lovely bride having been a pupil of his, while receiving her collegiate education. After John Iwin J. Bridges abandoned his family circa 1892, supposedly because his three oldest step-sons ran him off, both john and Mary (Smith) Mason Bridges later remarried, but they never bothered to obtain a divorce. Mary used the 7-year statute of limitations regarding abandonment of family either to have her marriage to John Birdges declared null and void, or to havehim declared legally dead (but mostprobably the former). 3
Event: Death Certificate 25 Sep 1935 Swainsboro, Emanuel County, Georgia
Note:
Certificate # 25046 Registered No. 87
Place of Death: Swainsboro, Emanuel County, 53rd Militia District, Franklin Hospital Date of Death: Sep 25th, 1935, 7:30 AM Burial Place: City Cemetery, Swainsboro, Sep 26, 1935 Undertaker: Swainsboro Funeral Parlor Informant: Mrs. M.

The recent prisoner of war scandals and new revelations
about 26 prisoners under US custody in Iraq and Afghanistan
who have died, in what investigators have concluded were
acts nothing short of criminal homicide, brings to mind a
book by David Hackett Fischer. Kishcher's book illustrates
how George Washington rescued the American Revolution by
defeating Hessian mercenaries in early battles in New
Jersey. But what is particularly relevant for today is how
Washington dealt with prisoners of war and in doing so set
new standards for the more humane treatment of war
prisoners.

"What Fischer has to say is: "According to the laws of
European was? Quarter was the privilege of being allowed to
surrender and to become a prisoner. By custom and tradition,
soldiers in Europe believed that they had the right to
extend quarter or deny it. In these laws of war no captive
had the inalienable right to be taken prison, or even to
life itself... With some exceptions, American leaders
believed that quarter should be extended to all combatants
as a matter of right…Americans were outraged when quarter
was denied to their soldiers." In a reaction to the British
troops who murdered seven soldiers who had surrendered only
to get their skulls bashed in Fischer concludes: "The
Americans recovered the mutilated corpses and were shocked."

But Washington did not respond with blind retaliation or
revenge, it only strengthened his resolve, wrote Fischer:
"Washington ordered that Hessian captives would be treated
as human beings with the same rights for humanity for which
Americans were striving. The Hessians were amazed to be
treated with decency and even kindness. At first they could
not understand it." So here you have it. In our tradition
we are the first people to bring this kind of humane
treatment to prisoners of war only to see ourselves descend
into the kind of barbaric treatment that our founder fathers
fought against. This is not good.

I know war is hell and standards change but when you have
the Attorney General of the United States say that the
Geneva Convention's rules on treatment of prisoners is a
quaint notion; I ask Mr. Attorney general to read a little
bit about his history. It is against any rules of conduct
to torture people to the point that they die in your
captivity. We call that murder. In the United States our
humane treatment in war has a tradition, which was a part
of the founding father's beliefs in a more just society. We
have fallen short, to be sure, many times but this is a
tradition we should be proud of and these recent deaths we
should be ashamed of as a nation.

Source: David Hackett, Washington's Crossing.

SAN ANTONIO (Aug. 12) - Is it an artesian spring, a broken water pipe or an abandoned well? Lucille Pope's red oak tree has gurgled water for about three months, and experts can't seem to get to the root of the problem.

Pope, 65, has sought answers from the Texas Forest Service, the Edwards Aquifer Authority and nurseries. They have taken pictures and conducted studies, but none have arrived at a firm answer.

"I got a mystery tree," Pope said in Friday editions of the San Antonio-Express News. "What kind of mystery do I have where water comes out of a tree?"

Her son, Lloyd, 47, discovered water leaking from the tree in April. He said it was cool, like it came from the tap. The only damp spot around the tree trunk is where the water lands.

Mark Peterson, a regional community forester from the Texas Forest Service said he believes it could be a spring, but pointed out that would be rare with the drought conditions this summer.

"If it is a burst pipe their monthly bill would be enormous," Peterson said.

Lucille Pope has started to wonder if the water has special properties. Her insurance agent dabbed drops of the water on a spider bite and the welt went away, she said.

"I just want to know if it is a healing tree or blessed water," she said. "That's God's water. Nobody knows but God."
