Sunday in the park
My friend Alisha and I went to mass yesterday morning at San Xavier Mission.
San Xavier del Bac Mission, Tucson, Arizona I've been talking about changing where I go to mass, because I am not getting anything out of the parish that is 5 minutes from my house. San Xavier is at least 40 minutes away. The ambience there is just so...holy...truly. I feel an affinity with the place that goes way back to childhood. My grandparents always went there, and maybe that is what I feel now. It is run by Franciscans, not parish priests, and I love their homilies. The music isn't perfect, but they sing their hearts out. I'm sure God doesn't mind :)
We went to breakfast afterward, a small cafe in the foothils...it was yummy. Alisha was going to stay for dinner and watch the game, but it was only about 11:30 am when we finished breakfast, so we decided to go for a walk. We went to Agua Caliente Park.
As we were walking toward the lake, a docent asked if we'd like to sit in on an "insect talk". I asked if the bugs were alive, she said no. So we went in for the 1 hour lecture. I was fascinated!! And I truly don't like bugs. The only good bug is a dead bug in my book! The entomologist was informative and entertaining as he described how important even the smallest of insects is to the whole eco system as a whole. Even termites. The talk focused on insects that we find every day in the desert. I have a new appreciation for the role they play in my yard, the desert. I won't kill them, but I certainly don't want them in my house. So, we'll have to gently relocate them outside. I have to say we don't have many bugs in the house, considering we are in the desert. Outside, well, that's a whole other story!
A few pics from our day at the park:
A flock of ducks. Up the way from a person was feeding the ducks, is a sign that says "please don't feed the ducks". Hmmmm...
This is a rickety old bridge that also has a sign that says "stay off the bridge". They've finally gated it...guess people didn't listen.
The other side of the lake. I love the reflection of the trees in the water. It was cloudy, then the sun would shine through, then cloud up again.
A cholla cactus! Ouch!
These are some of the largest cholla's I've seen, pretty healthy too. Their stems were puffy indicating they're storing water...notice the clouds...
Racoon prints
Glen says this is a dog print, but for the sake of drama, I'd say it was a bobcat. The depth of the indentation was deep indicating a heavier animal...yikes!
The trail. I'll have to go back in the spring when everything is green. It was a beautiful stroll on a Sunday afternoon.
There were people picnicing, cooking out, playing games. I love to see people using the parks, thats what they're there for. My dad worked for the parks and recreation system, actually retired from there, and we used to go every Sunday with many of my cousins, aunts...play softball, volleyball, or just take a nap in the shade. I realize that things have changed, and its no longer safe to do that, but it does bring back memories!
We watched the game when we got back home, commercials and all. We had some chili, sourdough bread, pita chips, hummus, guacamole, just munchies, so we could actually enjoy the game and commercials. We didn't even get to dessert...which was Ben & Jerry's ice cream...Chubby Hubby or Turtle Soup. I was stuffed.
Because I was out all day yesterday, I was sooo behind on chores, so I took a "mental health" day off from work today. I got so much done from 6 to noon. I made a list and started ticking things off as I had completed them. Ahhh, I feel better now.
Talk soon...

I can appreciate when you live so close to a church but you don't feel connected to it. I have a church right down the street from me and I feel no affinity for it whatsoever. But the church I go to is wonderful and great etc... but also over 30 miles each way for me to get to. But it's worth it because I can focus on the reason I'm supposed to be there for in the first place. Those pictures look lovely. Especially when I look out my window and see the frozen tundra of the Lake... brrrr...
