Glen, Dad & Golf...
Now, before y'all go thinking Glen should be nominated for sainthood, there are a few things he does, that get on my nerves...
A conversation we just had earlier:
Me: I'm going to make the chicken and rice dish for dinner
Glen: Can I make a suggestion?
Me: (hesitating) Um, ok
Glen: Can you sear the chicken first?
Me: Why?
Glen: For flavor
Me: (thinking WTH?? I've been making this dish for 30+ years, after watching my mom make it for many more) Um, sure...
Me: (thinking as I'm searing that damn chicken...this just isn't going to work, its going to be greasy...and I purposefully added way more pepper than I usually do, hoping its too spicy for Glen! He, he, he...I'll get him)
Glen: (as we're eating dinner) This is the best you've ever made.
Me: (grudgingly agreeing) Yes, it is.
But you know, thats how we get along. I'm not going to not try something just because he suggested it (call me stubborn)...although most of the time when I do take his advice, he's usually right. I had never tried asparagus, because I didn't like the word, but once I tried it, I liked it...buy it every chance I get or when its on sale!
We make a cold coffee concentrate. Its kind of an instant concentrate, but its not heated, until you're going to drink it. You soak the ground coffee in cold water in the toddy maker, for 24 hours, then drain it through a filter into the carafe. Whenever you want coffee, just add water to about 1/4 cup of concentrate, and it makes the best coffee. Well, after it drains, the grounds remain in the toddy maker. Sometimes Glen will leave it until the next time he makes the concentrate! Especially in the summer when its warmer, the old coffee grounds can mold...we've ruined plenty of filters this way. The reason he leaves it is because its a pain in the ass to clean the toddy maker, dump out the grounds, doesn't want to be bothered, etc. He doesn't like when I clean it, because its his job or whatever...anyway, it just gets onmy nerves because it clutters the counter, sometimes for weeks!
The screen off the french doors came off months ago. Its still off! If I knew how to put it back on, I would.
He fluffs his pillow every night before he gets in bed. Not just fluff, but fluff! And he has to fix the sheets so there are no creases in the sheets. WHY? You're going to get into bed and they'll crease anyway! Granted, I wake up with roadmaps on my face because my pillow wasn't fluffed, but whatever...
So there. He's not perfect, but I'll keep him anyway :)
I went by after mass to visit my parents. I hadn't seen mom since the end of January, and though I call her at least 3-4 times a week, I do miss her. My dad has had the flu for the past week, even after getting a flu shot. He has a biopsy of his prostate scheduled for 3/27, and if they find anything, they'll treat it with radiation. Its outpatient, and he hates attention, but I will take the day off to be with mom, maybe drive them if needed. Its really hard to see them aging. Dad hadn't aged for the longest time, or didn't seem like it to me, and lately, he's looking very much 74 years old. Just thinking of the inevitable makes me cry, so I try not to think of it too much.
The Accenture Match Play tournament begins this next week, Wednesday, I think, and runs through next weekend. Fair weather is forecast, though last year it was brutally and unseasonably cold. Throngs of people are already in town as traffic is much heavier. Add to that all exits and entrances to the only freeway, I-10, that runs through most of Tucson, are closed until 2010! Ugh!
Talk soon...

LOL, it IS the little things that can make or break us, and you seem to handle them well. Maybe these blogs and journals are more valuable than we give them credit for! The chicken story was classic. ("for flavor" lol).
I have to confess, if I were Glen, you'd have the coffee complaint about me too :) I'm one of those people who haven't figured out that it takes more energy to get out of doing something than it ever does to just do it. Men, huh?
Please take my good wishes for your Dad. I know what you mean when it suddenly becomes apparent that the Folks aren't kids any more. Good luck to him! -
LOL love the chicken story. ok why are the exits closed till 2010? that seems like a long time to me but down there they are about 20 years behind the times lol

Hi Myra,
That Chicken story is hysterical. At least you were able to admit that he was right. It sounds like he was pleasant/polite when making the suggestion that you sear the chicken. I sure hope he didn't start criticizing the way you usually make it ... in which case I'll bet you were tempted to sear something else ...
Best,
Marty -
Try not to think of the inevitable when it comes to your parents and enjoy every minute you have with them. I hope there is nothing wrong with your dad's prostate. My dad had cancer there. Anyway, have a good Monday.

You know he has faults, but you love him.
