Feeling Hopeful
Hearing Post-Ronnie Lynyrd Skynyrd – Best Things in Life
You'll find in this life if
There's somethin' that you believe
You got to get your hands dirty
When it's somethin' that you really need
If they ever give you somethin' too easily
Can't be too good, 'cause
Nothin' good's for free
Tell ya' straight from the heart
A bed of roses it will never be
Chris Gocong 6-3 263 DE Cal Poly
The Sporting News "War Room" Analysis:
Strengths:
Is fiery and tenacious. Shows initial explosion at the point of attack, stays low and shows burst when turning the corner. Shows great run/pass-recognition skills, excelling at sniffing out screen passes and draw plays. Is a strong tackler. Shows good lateral mobility to adjust on reverses and bootlegs.
Weaknesses:
Doesn't use hands well to shed blockers. Lacks ideal size and upper-body strength to be an effective bull rusher. Struggles if an offensive lineman gets a better jump at the snap. Didn't face much elite competition in Division I-AA.
Bottom line:
Gocong played the '03 season as an undersized nose tackle, demonstrating toughness and ability to keep a low pad level and explode at the point of attack. He was a man amongst boys in college but must develop better hand skills and strength to contribute in the NFL. Gocong is an early-Day 2 projection.
Dan Pompei analysis:
Is explosive, intense, determined and disruptive. Gets off snap quickly. Isn't flashy, but works hard. Was productive, but hasn't played against top competition. Is small for defensive end, but could be a 3-4 outside linebacker. Had an excellent Combine workout to improve his standing.
No. 15 on Pompei's DE rankings
The Mothership looked deeply into the small-school roles to find their third-round pick in Chris Gocong. Should the ratings listed above pan out, Gocong will be a fine addition to the Eagles defensive front, particularly in terms of defending screen passes that have been giving the Birds fits in the last 2 seasons.
While listed as a DE, and having played all defensive line positions during his college career, Gocong appears to be destined to be groomed as an OLB. His quickness and play recognition skills should suit him well as a possible replacement for Dhani Jones when his contract expires at the end of 2007.
While not addressing the potential need for the Safety position at season's end, he seems to be a prototypical player for Jimmy Johnson's defensive scheme. The Birds moved up to snag Gocong, indicating a strong belief in his upside.
