Feeling Ecstatic
Hearing Ugly Kid Joe - Sandwich
You could try to break me, take me
But you’ll never understand
You could funnel, tunnel
But you’ll never truly comprehend
That’s what I say
You could bleed me, feed me
But you’ll never truly be my friend
You could move me, move me, move me
But you’ll never see the end
That’s what I say
Now here is a pick that should have the Eagles-hating fans out there laughing hysterically. One hot topic of conversation at the bier-stand has been all about how the so-called football experts have been touting the needs for our Birds to upgrade the Wide Receiver position. Any Eagles fan would be a fool to say that the flanker corps is not weakened by the loss of "Leon." However, one man does NOT make a team!
The Eagles have a solid collection at the Receiver position with Brown, Gaffney, Greg Lewis, McCants, and to a lesser extent, Pinkston and McMullen.
It's the biermeister's opinion that unless Pinkston had a serious spike in his testosterone level, he should be cast aside. McMullen enters the last year of his contract, and only because of his size, and the effort he showed when finally getting a chance to play, has one more chance to make a difference on this team.
To this solid, if unspectacular cast of characters, the Birds have added Michigan stand-out Jason Avant, a solid possession-type receiver with soft hands and an excellent reaction to poorly-thrown balls. Avant had 87 catches for 1007 yards and 8 TDs last season for the Wolverines, and in this writer's view, those numbers are wonderful for playing the in run-orientated Big-10 Conference.
Sports Illustrated 2006 NFL Draft Preview:
BIO:
Three-year starter awarded All-Conference and All-Academic honors since his sophomore campaign. Led the team as a senior posting 87/1,007/8 after 38/447/3 the prior year.
POSITIVES:
Big, soft-handed wide-out with possibilities as a possession receiver. Displays good ball awareness and is a consistent hand-catcher who extends to grab the ball away from his frame. Consistently comes back to the ball and shields opponents away with his frame. Displays outstanding adjustment and body control grabbing the errant throw. Has both soft and strong hands. Effectively uses the sidelines and displays a sense of timing. Aggressive, works to pick up yardage after the catch and attacks blocking assignments.
NEGATIVES:
Lacks deep speed, cannot run to the long throw nor beat defenders down the field. Lacks quickness and sharpness running routes.
ANALYSIS:
Consistent the past three seasons, Avant is a clutch receiver with a passion for the game. Known as a player with a good work ethic, he is a good football player with potential as a second receiver in the NFL.
On the surface, it appears that the Eagles have once again selected another No. 2 receiver when the real need is a top-flight No. 1 man. Avant is a player custom-made for the Eagles offense. He's fearless over the middle, and more importantly an excellent down-field blocker, and that is paramount for springing Westbrook and Moats to display their open-field running skills.
Add to that his ability to use his body to protect the ball while making a reception, his come-back to the ball ability for when McNabb scrambles, and his soft hands and ability to adjust to the ball, he will be a fine addition to the Eagles.
