MLB Playoffs Preview

October. A baseball fans dream. A month of endless playoff baseball, where teams really define themselves. All clubs come into the month excited about making the postseason, but only one truly comes out happy. It dosent matter how good your doing in September, because its a new month and a new chance to redeem yourself. Anything can happen in October and many miracles have been produced. Maybe it will be your team.

So, here is my preview the 2006 MLB Playoffs. All series are best of 5, and the 2nd team listed has the homefield advantage.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Justin Verlander (above), along with many other young Tigers pitchers have no playoff experience but hope to make a good first impression this year.
Detroit Tigers (95-67) vs New York Yankees (97-65) - The Tigers, were having a dream season until getting swept by the Royals in the last 3 games of the season cost them the division title. Nevertheless, Detroit has shown over and over again this year, that they can hang with the best of them. But going to New York in the first round of the playoffs, is never an easy task. Both teams have above average pitching, with New York's ace being surprising Chien-Ming Wang (19-6) and the Tigers being Kenny Rogers (17-8). Overall, Detroits staff (Nate Robertson, Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman were all very good this year) is probably a little deeper but that could change if Mike Mussina and Randy Johnson are in playoff form for the Yankees. Batting wise, the Yankees are filled with star power throughout their lineup, but the Tigers are no fluke. Magglio Ordonez, Placido Polanco, Pudge Rodriguez and Carlos Guillen, are all experienced veterans who can produce runs when needed. This should be a very close series but I expect my Tigers to squeak out a upset. Call me biased, but I really have a feeling that Detroit will push on their story book season.
My Prediction: Tigers in 5
Twins catcher Joe Mauer, batted .346 this year, which was tops in the Majors.
Oakland Athletics (93-69) vs Minnesota Twins (96-66) - The Minnesota Twins barely squeaked out with a division title and are most likely happy to be playing the A's instead of the Yankees. But dont give up on the A's that fast. There rotation is very solid with ace Barry Zito, and Dan Haren and Esteban Loaiza backing him up. There offense isn't too shabby either with good young hitter Nick Swisher and seemingly ageless Frank Thomas. But the Twins high powered offense and pitcher Johan Santana (arguably the best pitcher in baseball, he will most likely pitch two games) seem to be too much for the A's. Minneota has huge threats in Justin Morneau, Torii Hunter, Joe Mauer and Michael Cuddyer. It should be a close series but the Twins with a huge homefield advantage will win this series.
My Prediction: Twins in 4
Dodgers first baseman Nomar Garciaparra, will have to be on top of his game if Los Angeles hopes to beat the mighty Mets.
Los Angeles Dodgers (88-74) vs New York Mets (97-65) - When at first look, this series seems to look like the makings of a sweet. I wouldn't jump to that conclusion anytime soon. Sure, the Mets have dominated the NL this year with a star studded lineup but the Dodgers have what they're lacking: pitching. Veteran pitcher Greg Maddux will have to be very good, along with Derek Lowe and a couple others, going against the Mets great batting. Pitching is no minor factor in October either, as nearly every champ has had a solid pitching staff. With ace Pedro Martinez out, and a sorry rotation outside of Tom Glavine, the Mets seem destined to be a playoff fluke. Not this round however. This series will be closer than most expect, but with New York's batting (Jose Reyes, David Wright, Carlos Beltran to name a few) firing on all cylinders, they'll be an awfully hard baseball team to beat. Sorry Nomah, maybe next year.
My Prediction: Mets in 5
Although Jake Peavy has been somewhat of a bust this year, the playoffs are a new beginning and a chance for him to shine on the national spotlight.
St. Louis Cardinals (83-78) vs San Diego Padres (88-74) - In a matchup (in my opinon) of two teams that probably dont deserve there playoff spots, over a couple AL teams, this series has the making to be a great one. The Cardinals have not been playing very well recently but as stated earlier, everything is on a new slate for the playoffs and the Cards have done pretty well in October recently. Albert Pujols (In many's eyes, the best all-around player in baseball), will have to step up big for St. Louis if they hope to go far. The Padres pitching has been pretty good this year, but the offense is what needs to start producing. Lacking real star power, San Diego probably dosen't have enough bats to reach deep into the playoffs. But there staff, led by Jake Peavy should be enough to get them by this round.
My Prediction: Padres in 5
NHL Preview - Northeast Divsion
Northeast Divsion
Former Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller, is a big reason why the Sabres made there deep playoff run.
1. Buffalo Sabres - For the first time in decades, the Buffalo Sabres come into the season as a Stanley Cup contender. Buffalo caught alot of people by surprise last year, by making it to the Conference Finals and losing to the eventual champion Carolina Hurricanes. The Sabres return most of there team back from last year and expect to be just as good, with divisional rival Senators losing a couple key parts. Two huge contributors back are defenseman Chris Drury, and right wing Maxim Afinogenov. Break out goaltender Ryan Miller is also back, and hopes to build on last year. The Sabres should be a contender, but if anything, they have taught you to expect the unexpected.
Dany Heatley (above), Daniel Alfredsson and Jason Spezza form the leagues top line.
2. Ottawa Senators - The Senators once again last year, flew threw the regular season but failed to come up with anything in the postseason. It has been a trend for Ottawa teams to be a bust in the playoffs, and they want to end that now. With defenseman Zdeno Chara gone to division rival Boston, they will be much weaker on defense, but they still have one of the best offenses. Jason Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley combined for 112 goals and produced most of the Senators offense. But with Chara gone, it will be hard for Ottawa to repeat last years great regular season, but that still leaves the door open for a good postseason finally.
Saku Koivu is the undisputed leader of the Canadiens, but they need someone else to step up and score goals.
3. Montreal Canadiens - Sure, Montreal made the playoffs last year but not by much and they weren't that great of an overall team. Led by goaltender Cristobal Huet in the 2nd half of the season, the Canadiens just barely made it to the playoffs and they were one and done against Carolina in the first round. Huet was very surprising last year and they will need him to repeat his performance of .929 save percentage. Saku Koivu is their best player but even he is a question mark, with an eye injury from the playoffs. The Canadiens will most likely be a mediocre team, but they won't slip in the postseason this time.
The addition of All-Star defenseman Zdeno Chara, immediately makes Boston a better team but there still not a playoff caliber team.
4. Boston Bruins - The Boston Bruins song for this off-season should be "Change, Change, Change". The Bruins made a ton of moves this summer, in both the front office and the players. Zdeno Chara (All-Star defenseman) from Ottawa, is defiently there biggest addition and makes them a much better defensive team. They also got a new G.M. (Peter Chiarelli) and a new coach (Dave Lewis). Boston was already a not very good team, and with all these changes it will take them a while to get used to. They will most likely be a improved team, but still at the bottom of the division.
At 35 years old, center Mats Sundin is the Maple Leafs only legitimate star.
5. Toronto Maple Leafs - The Maple Leafs were a solid team last year (41-33-8) but with key losses this off-season they will drop off a bit. They lost goaltender Ed Belfour, right wing Tie Domi and center Eric Lindros. All were pivotal parts of the team and Toronto will feel the after effects of losing them. To boot, the Leafs have a new coach (former Carolina coach Paul Maurice) and that usually takes a little bit of time to adjust to. The only notable addition for Toronto is Michael Peca, who is a good leader and one of the best at checking. Toronto, be prepared for a lost season.
NFL Pick 'Em Week 4
Teams in Bold = My pick
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Indianapolis @ NY Jets: Indy proved last week, that they're still the cream of the crop in the AFC, and should pick up another win at New York.

New Orleans @ Carolina: The Panthers are back on track, and should top the undefeated Saints at home.

Minnesota @ Buffalo: I'm not really sure about both of these teams yet, so I'll give it to the home team.

Arizona @ Atlanta: The Cardinals were supposed to be a good team, but haven't showed that yet. It will be hard to beat Atlanta at home.

San Diego @ Baltimore: A high flying offense, against a stifling defense. This should be a game to watch. But I think San Diego has too much weapons to contain.

Miami @ Houston: The Texans have proved so far, to be just as bad as last year. But im taking them in a upset.

San Francisco @ Kansas City: The Chiefs have been dissapointing so far, but they should be able to beat the 49ers.

Dallas @ Tennessee: The Cowboys should easily ruin Vince Young's first career start.

Detroit @ St. Louis: Mike Martz's reunion with the Rams will not be pretty. Expect revenge on Detroit from St. Louis.

Jacksonville @ Washington: The Jaguars even with a loss to Indy, played great and are really on fire this year. They should beat the Skins.

Cleveland @ Oakland: One very bad team, against another very bad team. One however (The Raiders) has a hefty homefield advantage. But the Browns win.

New England @ Cinncinnati: After an emotional victory over rival Pittsburgh, the Bengals will roll again.

Seattle @ Chicago: Most likely the game of the week, two NFC powerhouses face off. With Shaun Alexander gone, the home team Bears should get the win.

Green Bay @ Philadelphia: It will be very hard for Brett Favre to repeat last weeks performance against a good Eagles secondary. Philly in a blowout.

Performer of the Week:  Eagles QB Donovan McNabb - He's off the best start of his career so far and it should get easier against a weak Packers defense.

NHL Preview - Atlantic Division

    Well, first off I would like to be honest and tell you this: I dont really know that much about hockey and the NHL. But I still watch it every once in a while, and know alot of the players, and the season is fast approaching so I thought I would make a preview for the 2006-07 season. I will probably post one division at a time. Enjoy.

Atlantic Division

Henrik Lundqvist is a very proming and young goalie for the Rangers.

1. New York Rangers - The Rangers completely turned it around last season, making it to the playoffs (they lost in the 1st round), when in 2003-04 (the last year the NHL season was played) they went a dismal 27-40. The addition of LW Brendan Shannahan, makes the Rangers an immediate contender, and the former Red Wing should mesh well with superstar RW Jaromir Jagr. Shannahan has been very durable and reliable in his career with the Red Wings and Blues, and leads active players in goals with 598. In goal for New York, is super sophmore, Henrik Lundqvist who led Swedento the 2006 Olympic gold. He should only improve this year. Expect the Rangers to be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

When healthy, Peter Forsberg is an elite Wingman.

2. Philadelphia Flyers - After losing last playoffs to the Sabres in the first round, the Flyers are primed to make another run. If they want that to happen, they have to keep Peter Forsberg healthy. Forsberg has averaged only 57 games a season, the past 9 season, but is one of the best players in the NHL when he is on the ice. At the other Wing is Simon Gagne, who is a great player when Forsberg is p;aying but struggles a bit when hes not. Philadelphia is defiently one of the best offensive teams in the NHL but there shaky defense, might keep them from going far.

Devils Goalie Martin Brodeur might be aging a bit, but he is still one of the best NHL players in the net.

3. New Jersey Devils - The Devils have been one of the most consistent teams in the NHL in recent years (they have reached the postseason in 10 consecutive seasons), but with a new coach and a average offensive attack, New Jersey might be set back a bit this year. No doubt the Devils led by goaltender Martin Brodeur will be a good team, and probably make the playoffs, but with the Rangers and Flyers getting better, don't expect anything huge.

Phenom Sidney Crosby, is one of the few bright spots on the Penguins team.

4. Pittsburgh Penguins - Sure the Penguins own one of the best young players in the NHL (Sidney Crosby) but that dosen't make them a good team. Pittsburgh also has another phenom, in Evgeni Malkin but they can not rely on either Crosby, or Malkin to bring them a postseason berth.The Pens, are basically shaky on all areas of the ice and won't be contending for the division title anytime soon. But the Penguins will most defiently be a team to watch in a couple years.

Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro will have big things expected from him, as he was signed to a NHL record 15-year, $67.5 million deal.

5. New York Islanders - Stuck in New York state, with the much more popular Devils, and Rangers, it dosen't help that the Islanders cant beat them on the ice either. Even the lone bright spot on the team (goaltender Rick DiPietro), was most likely overpaid. I guess new GM Garth Snow (A former Islanders goalie), didn't learn from the mistake New York's front office made in 2001, in paying Alexei Yashin a foolish 10-year contract. Yashin has not produced as expected, and is one of the most overrated players in the League. Islanders fans, brace for a long year.

TO Timeline

Ever since Dallas Cowboys WR Terrell Owens entered the NFL, he has been surrounded by controversy and media attention. Quite frankly, I am getting sick of all the junk about TO. I think the news has better and more important storys to cover, then a greedy self centered football player. Yes, he is a super athlete and one of the best WR's but ultimately, that stuff gets hidden by his stupid actions off the field. I would like to give you an idea of how much attention has been swirled around TO, so I put together this timeline.

Owens speaks to media about the supposed suicide attempt, which turned out to be an accidental overdose on pain pills.

1996 - Owens is drafted out of Chattanooga, in the 3rd round by the San Francisco 49ers.

2000 - During an October contest in Dallas, Owens celebrated scoring a touchdown by running to midfield of Texas Stadium and posing on the star logo of the Cowboys. He later repeated his actions following another TD and was blindsided by the Cowboys' George Teague.

2001 - After blowing a 19-point lead in Chicago and losing in overtime, the disgruntled receiver accused head coach Steve Mariucci of protecting good friend Dick Jauron, head coach of the Bears

2002 - In an October contest on Monday Night Football in Seattle, Owens pulled a 'Sharpie' marker out of his sock after catching a TD pass. He then proceeded to autograph the ball and hand it to his financial adviser sitting in an end zone luxury suite rented by Shawn Springs, the CB he had just beaten on the play.

2002 - After scoring a touchdown in a December contest with the Green Bay Packers, Owens celebrated with a pair of Pom-Poms borrowed from a 49ers cheerleader.

2003 - Following a bumpy season that included several sideline tirades by Owens, he and the 49ers decided to part ways.

2004 - Owens’ agent failed to meet a free agency deadline in March, making him ineligible to become a free agent. Because they retained his rights, the 49ers then traded him to the Baltimore Ravens, but Owens refused to report to his new team. He expressed his desire to play in Philadelphia, and filed a grievance, claiming he should be granted free agency. After a series of negotiations, a deal was worked out between the three teams which sent Owens to Philadelphia where he signed a seven-year, $49 million deal against the advice of the players’ union.

2004 - In an interview with Playboy magazine, Owens hinted that ex-teammate Jeff Garcia was gay, a claim he later recanted.

2004 - In a November contest with the Baltimore Ravens, after scoring a touchdown, Owens openly mocked Ray Lewis by performing the middle linebacker’s trademark celebration dance.

2004 - In a Monday Night contest later that month, Owens appeared in a controversial skit to kick off the network’s presentation of the game which resulted in an FCC investigation.

2005 - Owens hired agent Drew Rosenhaus in April and announced he was not happy with his contract. He also tells CNBC that, despite making $7.5 million in 2004, he needs a new contract to “feed his family.”.

2005 - After hinting that he might hold out of training camp, Owens shows up with a bad attitude, refusing to acknowledge the media or speak to his teammates. After a confrontation with head coach Andy Reid, he was suspended for one week.

2005 - During an interview with ESPN's Graham Bensinger on November 3, Owens took shots at the Eagles franchise for not publicly recognizing his 100th touchdown catch. During the interview he stated the Eagles showed a "lack of class". He also suggested the Eagles would be better off with Packers QB Brett Favre instead of Donovan McNabb.

2005 - On November 4, Owens issued a half-hearted apology through the media, but failed to deliver comments regarding Donovan McNabb, which head coach Andy Reid insisted he include.

2005 - Owens was suspended November 5 by the Eagles for the club's contest against the Washington Redskins on November 6.

2005 - On November 7, Owens' suspension was stretched to four games, and head coach Andy Reid added that Owens would not play for the remainder of the season.

2006 - On March 14, the Eagles cut Owens just one day before he was due a $5 million roster bonus.

2006 - On July 5, Owens released a tell-all book revealing his side of the story associated with his time in Philadelphia.

2006 - On July 13, Owens claimed he was misquoted in his autobiography. Owens blamed the use of the word 'heroic" in association with his return for Super Bowl XXXIX on his co-author.

2006 - On August 3, Owens missed the first of 14 consecutive days of practice because of a hamstring problem despite an MRI two days later revealing no major problems. After returning to practice for several days, Owens claimed he re-aggravated the injury because his coaches pushed him back to the playing field too soon. Many are skeptical on the real extent of the injury. This time he didn't return to practice until August 29.

2006 - On August 10, while still out with an injured hamstring, Owens drew attention to himself by wearing the silver and blue uniform of Lance Armstrong's Discovery Channel pro cycling team while riding a stationary bicycle on the sidelines.

2006 - On September 26, Owens was taken by ambulance to Baylor University Medical Center for what was thought to be a suicide attempt. The following day, Owens denied trying to kill himself, claiming a mixture of pain pills and supplements caused him to be "out of it" when talking to emergency respondent.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Well alot went down in Michigan sports this weekend, so I thought I might sum it up.

Vance Wilson is doused during the Tigers' celebration after Sunday's win.

Probably the biggest and most exciting news of this weekend was that the Detroit Tigers clinched a playoff berth. Its the first time in 19 years they have made the playoffs, and I'm so excited to see them in playoff baseball for the first time in my life. They are guaranteed at least the Wild Card but they're hoping to win the division as the Minnesota Twins (who also clinched a playoff berth) are 1 game behind them for the league. Bravo to the Tigers for such a storybook year (lets hope they can finish with a good ending!) Be sure to watch the Tigers in October!

Lions QB Jon Kitna had a great day with 2 TD's and 342 yards passing, but it wasn't enough to get the Lions the win.

Unfortunately, on Sunday the Detroit Lions lost again making them 0-3. They came up one touchdown short against the Green Bay Packers, losing 34-27. Brett Favre had a great game and looked like he was 25 again. Kitna also had a good game but failed to come up with points on critical drives. The Lions travel to St. Louis next week to play the Rams, and hope to get their first win.

Mario Manningham had another great game, hauling in 2 TD's as the Wolverines came up victorious.

On Saturday, both Michigan and Michigan State played great games but only one came away with the win. The Wolverines hosted the Wisconsin Badgers, and overcame a shaky first half to win 27-13. Michigan's stifling defense came up big and held the Badgers to only 3 second half points. In South Bend, Michigan State played Notre Dame and lost 40-37. It was a close and great game, but ultimately the #12 ranked Fighting Irish came up big. MSU was looking great going into the 2nd half, leading 31-14 but fell apart in the 2nd half, as ND QB Brady Quinn played great and put himself in the Heisman race again. Michigan goes to Minnesota to play next week, and Michigan State hosts Illinois.

NFL Pick 'Em Week 3

Well its time for the Pick 'Em again, as its Week 3 and teams are starting to reveal thier true selves. Last week I was 10-6, and I hope to improve on that but it wont be easy with a full slate of good games.

Teams in bold = My pick.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Washington @ Houston: The Skins have started 0-2 but against a bad Texans team they should put it together.
NY Jets @ Buffalo: The Bills have been surprising and at home they should get the win.
Green Bay @ Detroit: Both teams are 0-2 but that ends today, as the division rivals square off. It will most likely be Detroit.
Jacksonville @ Indianapolis: This is my upset special of the week, as the Jags come to Indy and pull out a victory.
Chicago @ Minnesota: The Bears have looked great this year, and against a shaky Vikings team they should improve to 3-0
Tennessee @ Miami: The Phins have dissapointed so far, but they should pick it up a notch as Culpepper gets into the groove against a bad Titans team.
Cinncinnati @ Pittsburgh: Ben Roethlisberger looked pretty bad in his debut. He wont be that bad this week, but the Bengals are too much for the defending champs.
Carolina @ Tampa Bay: Surprisingly, the teams that were supposed to be at the divisions top are currently running at 0-2. The Panthers with Steve Smith (hopefully) should win.
Baltimore @ Cleveland: The Browns always seem to find a way to beat the Ravens and that continues this year.
NY Giants @ Seattle: This should be one of the best games of the week as NFC powerhouses go at it. Seattle with homefield advantage sneaks a win.
St. Louis @ Arizona: These division rivals are both 1-1 and no ones really sure where they are both headed. I give the win to the home team.
Philedelphia @ San Francisco: The Eagles have been surprising this year, as have the 49ers. But McNabb and co. is too much for the Niners defense.
Denver @ New England: A rematch of last years playoff game. The Patriots havent looked so hot so far, but at home they're looking for some revenge.
Atlanta @ New Orleans: The Saints come marching back into the Superdome, and they will motivated to pull the upset.
Performer of the Week: Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich - As Jacksonville goes into Indy, the surprising Jags will be primed for the upset, and Leftwich should have a good game.
The Wild Card Race heatens up
From here on out, expect things in the MLB to be a lot more wild and tense. As the Wild Card Race continues to heat up, teams are fighting to get into the postseason and our defiently going to come out to play every day.
The Minnesota Twins hope to snatch a playoff spot as Justin Morneau continues to produce RBI's (2nd in MLB).
In the AL wild card race, out of nowhere the Minnesota Twins have snuck up on the Tigers and reduced Motowns lead to 1 1/2 game. The Chicago White Sox are 6.5 games back from Minnesota for the Wild Card lead, but dont give up on last years champs yet, as they will give up a fight no doubt. If the Tigers hope to keep their lead and possibly grab homefield advantage in the AL (New York is in front of them by 1 games for that), they need to step up these last couple weeks, as they have been playing below .500 ball since August. Detroit has been in and out of slumps for the past month now but because of there great start they are still in prime position for the playoffs (if the Tigers win and the White Sox lose tonight, they have clinched a playoff spot).
Phillies 1st baseman Ryan Howard leads the league in HR's with 58, and is hoping his Phillies will get the Wild Card spot.
Meanwhile over in the NL things are even tighter and more teams are involved in the race. 7 teams are in the race in the NL and the Padres are only 1/2 game ahead in there division so technically 8. Anything can happen in this last couple weeks, but most likely a couple teams will be wiped out of the race this week. The Giants, Astros and Reds are all 5.5 games back (and the Marlins 5 games back) and with 8 games left on most teams schedules, they need alot to happen if they get in the playoffs. Right now the 2 contenders look like the Dodgers and Phillies, who are in 1st and 2nd place respectively with Philedelphia only 1/2 game back. At any time though the Dodgers could take the NL west lead and the Padres would be in the Wild Card race.
In conclusion, expect Major League Baseball to be very exciting these next couple weeks, as the contenders seperate themselves from the pretenders.
My AL Wild Card Prediction: Minnesota Twins (Tigers win the AL Central).
My NL Wild Card Prediction: Philedelphia Phillies (Dodgers win NL West)
