Pecans that drop to early may not be of good quality because it is a way the pecan tree thins and sheds the bad nuts. The pecan tree will do this from lack of water. The only way to tell is crack them open and see. The very good nuts will hang on the tree until we get a good cold snap or you shake the tree so the pecans fall. Hope you have a good crop, John.

Okay, I feel bad about asking this. I moved into a house that has a pecan tree in the back yard. I have read things about picking up the fruit before it lies too long. But, there are green ones and brown ones all over my yard.
What do I do. Pick them up, put them on a table inside to dry out ... or what. How do I know when they're ready to eat.
Everything here seems to be from professionals and I hate to bother you with basic stuff, but I haven't been able to find any information anywhere else.
Thanks,
Max -
We have a beautiful large pecan tree in our front yard which is at least 50 years old. I have never harvested pecans, so I don't know the first thing about drying or curing them. There are plenty of them this season. Are there ways to easily shell them without expensive equipment?
Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks all. -

Seguin will celebrate 4th of July with it's Freedom Fiesta Parade on saturday the July 3rd 2004. There we will be with our Big Pecan and of course the mascot Squirrel gaurding the nut! and maybe also make the trip to San Antonio. John
