Untitled Artwork from the 1970's

As a student at S. IL. University in the mid 1970's our drawing class went to a park in Carbondale, IL. where some of the street people were at. Our instructor paid for several bottles of wine of the type which they were accustomed to drinking (Muscatel, I believe) in exchange for them to sit as model's for us to draw. I did some sketching but this is not from that. As friend found a B/W photo on the ground of one of the very same gentleman we used as one of the model's in the park. I used the photo to create this drawing in colored pencil, and rapidiograph pen inking. Behind him to the left is actually a part of the park. To the right I referred to a photo of a sunset with ocean, wave, and beach. Another photo of a lion is from an advertisment. The rest is from imagination. It is as if the subject is dreaming a bizarre dream. I added a little train as the actual train tracks running thru Carbondale would be directly behind him.

This illustration brings back memories of when I was a young student in art school. My work wasn't nearly as good as yours, though. I was taking graphic design courses, and though it was fun, what I really loved more than anything were the life-drawing classes... I did really well in that class. I didn't pursue drawing figures from life, but from time to time, I do use my observations to help me develop an illustration I may be doing from a photograph. That's what it's really about in the end... having good observation skills. Yours are very sharp, indeed. Interesting that the street people would pose for a bottle of cheap wine rather than a good meal. But I suppose for some street folks, they are less hungry than they are cold and lonely, and tired of being ignored and neglected. I didn't draw any street people, but I remember I used take my sketch pad and rapidographs out onto the campus and just sit down where students were bound to be posing, walking by, studying, laying on the grass, standing and talking... like in a park. I'd do quick free-hand sketches... sometimes I only had seconds, other times longer, to capture the pose. I enjoyed those drawing experiences. Do you get many opportunities to do something so free and bizarre these days? I'm just not into bizarre... although I've had some bizarre dreams! Hmm, that gives me an idea! Thanks for visiting and commenting in my journal, Mark. Bea

This is really cool, Mark. Your imagination to use these different scenes to make one complete picture is quite interesting. You`ve definitely got talent!
