Hearing Carry On Wayward Son -- Kansas

The Water Heater

When someone tells me a story about their house/landlord, I usually tell this story--it makes me laugh...now.
It was last winter.  I was getting Lexi ready for school, and had to go into the basement to get her clothes.  When I did, I heard a whooshing sound, and the floor was turning into a lake.  What the hell, I was thinking.  I looked around for the source, and found the water heater had exploded at the top, shooting hot water.  I went upstairs and called for Joey, and he called our next-door landlord, we'll call him George.  When George finally got the phone (he usually sleeps until about 10 or 11am), he told us to call the gas company.  When they came, they immediately "red-tagged" the water heater.  George said he would have someone out to fix it that afternoon.  Cool, we thought.  So we waited...and waited...and waited...until the next day.

When his "handyman" finally came, he installed a new heater.  We called PG Energy (gas company) to come and light the pilot, but when the guy came, he tagged the new one, saying that it was a fire hazard.  Thing was, the exhaust for the heater was on the bottom, and the a**hole who installed it put the heater up on wood blocks.  DUH!!!  When we told George, he first cursed the guy up and down, then proceeded to call him back to fix it again.  Grrrrr.  Long story short, it was fixed a week later.  During that time, we were taking showers at the in-laws' house.  Fun.

After that, everything was ok, except for some reason, our kitchen faucet wasn't working.  George told us all the plumbers were out of town.  Coincidence??  I think not.  After waiting a week for the plumbers to come home, we decided to call one ourselves.  The first one we called came out that afternoon.  Said the pipes were frozen.  Again, long story short, George paid $400 for a new sink, faucet, pipes, and the unthawing of the pipes.  All he really had to pay was $40 for was the pipe, but he got the rest replaced...he still says we made him get it.
That's my story.  Who knows, maybe I'll tell of other house horror stories.
til next time...=)
