The Honor of an Atheist

There is no substitute for honor, no deity belief that can surpass the commitment to one’s own self respect or the respect  gained through one’s actions and/or words.  There is no need to pray for honor from the gods if it cannot be found within one’s heart and mind.  To paraphrase the title character in “Rob Roy”...... “Honour is a gift one gives oneself.”

Nor can that gift be passed to a following generation unless it is absorbed by that generation...unless honor itself becomes a legacy for one’s family.  No matter what we do, we can aspire to do it with honor.  No matter where we live, we can live with honor.  No matter when we die, we can die with honor.  The gift is ours to give ourselves....and it is ours to lose.

Perhaps it seems to lofty a gift to which I cling, but I know this much...that life without honor is not worthy of a person who chooses to leave deity belief with all the other superstitions of primitive humanity.  I choose honor to illuminate my path instead of unsubstantiated supernatural entities, or the palsied light of faith.

Wow, my first comment!  Comic book heroes that are godless...totally awesome!

I wonder how many more there are?

Honorable Atheists (or at least agnostic, sometimes stories vary) comic book heroes

    Batman
    Wolverine

no two heroes have triumphed more odds and had more pain inflicted on them than these two.  and the fact that wolverine is a hundred and something and still hasn't  found god yet is funny.
Nightcrawler:" Have you ever prayed to God, Logan?"
Wolverine: "Once. Years ago in the army. My mistake"
