Tijuana Otay Club Visits
We were pleased to greet four members of the Rotary Club of Tijuana Otay at our November 2nd meeting: President Fernando Zarate Melo, Secretary Lupita Sandoval, and past presidents Javier Valdez and Jose Bruno Roldan.
The Tijuana club has been restructuring and the goodwill visit was to confirm their continuing commitment to our international partnership. In the last five years, the two clubs have changed the lives of more than 200 children, providing hearing aids, cleft palate surgeries and corrective eye surgeries to indigent children in the Tijuana area.
The Mexican club has also agreed to act as the international sponsor for our proposed matching grant, which will provide school equipment and supplies in the Bay St. Louis/Waveland area devastated by hurricane Katrina. We are grateful for the friendship of our southern neighbors!
El Modena Interact Update
November 1 is the start of World Interact Week and we were happy to welcome three officers of the El Modena club to our November 2 meeting: President Oanh Buih, VP Kelly Harmon and Treasurer Trevor Balius. Oanh and Kelly gave us an overview of the club's many activities. Coming up, they will participate in the Scouting for Food drive on November 12th, and are very excited about decorating the Rotary International 2006 float for the Tournament of Roses Parade.
The club, which now has 35 members, has also volunteered more than 80 hours to the Orange Public Library, assisting staff with the many challenges they face as the library expansion construction continues.
As we approach the holidays, El Mo Interact will be found volunteering for "Holiday Hope" at the First Presbyterian Church, and packing boxes for the Helping our Troops program.
Many more activities are planned! Visit the club's website at http://elmointeract.orangesunriserotary.org for a calendar of upcoming events.
'Tis the Season for Reading by 9
District Chair Teri Snyder kicked off the annual book drive at the presidents' meeting on November 1. Once again, Orange Sunrise will partner with local elementary schools to provide matching grants for the purchase of new books.
Teri also recognized the support of the El Modena Interact Club, which provided volunteers throughout the day at the Orange County Fair book drive in July. Teri presented the special "Reading by 9" lapel pins to the visiting Interact officers on November 2nd, and one for each of the participating students.
Christmas in November
Do you have left over Christmas cards just sitting in a closet or drawer? Pull them out and write a message to someone serving in the military. Member Dick Yarger is collecting cards between now and November 16th and will see that they are properly mailed overseas. Bring your completed cards to the November 9th meeting or drop them off with John Bouyer by November 14th so that we can get them to Dick.
Got a Guest?
Membership chair Jack Sappington has been busy making friends. This week, David Mau of the District Lounge joined us for breakfast--only 3 hours after going to bed! The District, located on West Chapman, is a sponsor of the Orange Plaza Car Show and also provided delicious pulled pork sandwiches for the YMCA's booth at the International Street Fair. If you haven't visited the District Lounge, be sure to stop in and say hello!
And, invite someone to Rotary today! November 16th will be a special program, with PDG Allan Stark talking about his experiences in India. A great day to share Rotary with someone new!
