Haunted Heart: The Life and Times of Stephen King
by Lisa Rojak
FREE ACID-FREE BOOK COVER ON EACH COPY!
OVERVIEW: One of the most prolific and popular authors of the last thirty years, Stephen King has become part of pop culture history. In this unauthorized biography, Lisa Rogak reveals the troubled background and life-long fears that inspire one of the twentieth century's most influential authors. Abandoned by his father, King's mother raised him in rural Maine in a house without plumbing. Though he excelled in college, he graduated already married and a father. Afterwards he wrote ceaselessly at night, churning out stories at an incredible rate, while sweating out his days at an industrial laundry. When success came, it happened in a flash. Soon his substance abuse risked destroying his career and, worse, his life. But he survived, kept his family intact, and continued writing at a level of originality few authors could hope to achieve. Haunted Heart chronicles King's Horatio Alger-esque story and shows the character of a man who, despite his dark and disturbing work, has become revered by his countless fans as an All-American voice more akin to Mark Twain than H.P. Lovecraft.

BAND: BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB
ALBUM: BABY 81

My Father's Day present finally arrived last Saturday as my family took me to see Stone Temple Pilots here in Atlanta. I've seen STP several times, and they were exceptionally good this time. Like any relationship with it's ups and downs (and STP has had it's roller coaster ride) their current get-back-together seems to have energized the group. Which in turn translated into the 15,000 plus crowd in attendance. This was in evidence at the lawn crowd (we were at the new Verizon Amphitheater) as most of them stood for over 2 hours! Thankfully this old rocker had a seat most of the time ;-). I love to rock, but sometimes it's just good to groove and relax with these bones of mine. My wife didn't mind either.
However I'm here to tell you about one of the two opening bands that really caught my attention: BRMC aka Black Rebel Motorcycle Club! I haven't been this excited about a rock band.. well.. since Nirvana! Their whole set was just fantastic! As a man who 'se probably seen over 500 concerts as a fan and professional (working for Polygram Records for ten years) a lot of it can just goes in one ear.. you get the picture. Not this time. BRMC can rock! They also deliver a slow groove that can make sit back, cock an ear, and melt in your chair with your eyes closed. They mix old with the new. Definitely touches of The Beatles within some of their sound. Very spiritualat times and rockin' at others. After their set I went down to merchandising and to my surprise, picked up the last CD they had on the stand! There was a stack of them earlier when my family picked up some STP merch.
I've learned that this is their fourth album, and it's produced by the band and Michael Been (who led The Call). It is a highly polished album which I think adds to the allure of BABY 81. If this keeps up, I may start selling music at the Overlook too! You can check out tracks at Amazon if you want to check 'em out.
Songs I recommend: Weapon of Choice, Windows, Cold Wind, 666 Conducer.
