Weekend Assignment #85: Magazines, Anyone?
Weekend Assignment #85: What magazines do you subscribe to and why?
SageWoman: This is a quarterly magazine of Goddess spirituality aimed primarily at women. It includes women's stories, Goddess myth, ritual, networking and more. It's very poetic and unlike any other magazine.
PanGaia: This is a quarterly magazine that explores Pagan spirituality at home and around the world. I love it because it offers a vision of a world in which living in spirit and living on earth support and enrich each other and the writers understand that ancient ritual and tradition and modern science all have a place in the future. It explores myth, magic, environmentalism, science, and much more. It's intelligent and one the best Pagan magazines around.
New Witch: This quarterly magazine is young and hasn't really figured out what it wants to be. It's aimed at beginning Pagans and Witches and wants to be sexy and trendy for younger readers without isolating older beginners. It's a fun read and I want to be supportive of my community so I subscribe.
The Blessed Bee: This is a family newsletter, not quite a magazine. It's small, only about 32 pages and published quarterly, but the information in it is solid. It has great resources for Pagan families.
Circle Magazine: I don't subscribe to this Pagan quarterly, but I always buy it and plan to subscribe. Each issue is dedicated to a particular theme and is filled with terrific articles, rituals, meditations, news, and much more. It's published by Circle Sanctuary, one of the most important Pagan organizations in the country. It's dedicated to networking, research, and education. I love it because it's really centered on community and activism and those are important to me.
The Beltane Papers: This is another one I don't subscribe to, but purchase regularly and plan to subscribe. This magazine is focused on women's mysteries and Goddess spirituality. It contains a lot of great art, Goddess lore, recipes, rituals and more. It's heavily feminist so it doesn't have a large audience and every issue is a small miracle. It's a terrific magazine and it really is a work of love. It's published by an all volunteer, feminist, egalitarian group of women who work out of their homes.
In Style: I don't subscribe to this glossy magazine, but I probably should; I buy it every single month. I love to see the fashion and beauty trends and see what celebrities are up to in a non-tabloid way. Not that I ever actually buy anything showed in this magazine. Everything is wildly expensive -- $300 for a pair of jeans, $120 for moisturizer, $50 for eye shadow, you get the idea.
Real Simple: I LOVE this magazine. This is the magazine for real people. It contains ideas, solutions, and answers for everything -- easy recipes, 25 ways to save during the holidays, what to say in those awkward situations, what to bring to every party, how to organize your closet, new uses for old things, and so on. And the prices are reasonable -- $40 for a pair of jeans, $2 for that cool kitchen gadget, $20 for a cute tote bag. I LOVE this magazine.
I buy other magazines when a feature story captures my attention. For instance, I purchased the latest issue of Time which includes a special report on global health and disease. And my mother buys several Spanish magazines so there are always quite a few mags around the house.
I keep all my Pagan magazines, but when the others start to pile up, I clip out articles I want, file those, and toss the rest of the magazine.
Extra Credit: I'm not sure if this counts, but my first subscription was to Archie Comics. I honestly don't remeber what was my first magazine subscription, but I suspect it might have been Highlights.
