Another one of my MANY pet peeves
As heard on my local news tonight "Under the new law, cities are now supposed to set their limits based on what 85 percent of drivers travel under normal, free-flowing conditions."
OY! I feel so much safer now! A while back our state expressway speed limits went from 55 to 70 in most places. Somebody finally came out and just flat admitted that 70 was the speed most drivers were driving, so that's what the speed limit should be. Gee, now that most drivers are driving 80 are we going to raise it again? One of the roads they talked about in our local news tonight is right around the corner from me and the speed limit is 35. Nobody (except sort of me) drives anywhere near 35 on this road. It's just wrong. The police officer had his radar gun out and checked a lot of cars and then announced that the speed limit should be 45 or 55 based on what drivers were driving. Well, excuse me, but there are two huge distribution centers right there - which means BIG trucks. And frankly I think it would be way nicer to be going 35 so those trucks have a chance to actually get out into the 4 lanes of traffic safely.... Just my silly opinion.
They did go on to say in the story that "The law spells it out exactly by writing what the local speed limit should be, based on access points -- driveways and intersections -- in a half-mile stretch." I'd like to see those new standards. They recently lowered the speed limit on my road from 35 to 30. I have to say it's been 35 for the, well....for few years that I've been driving. I still find myself forgetting! But since I live on the street I figure I can drive as fast as I like? Right?

Wow, I didn't realize they were setting the standards based on what drivers generally drive.... I tend to drive too fast. I am glad they keep the limits low when they do so it keeps me in check. Yep, if ya live on the street you get to go as fast as ya want. And I know, as we have that same rule here.... LOL> Hugs,

Somehow I think there wiill be more accidents. Now drivers may hit 80 to 90 miles an hour. Some people are like that. They will go ten or twenty miles over the limit. It's crazy, how the government comes up with these laws. This one seems to be based on people going faster than required by the law. How ironic!

I hate driving. I hate speed. And I don't do expressways. Thank God I live where I do. I'd really be hampered anywhere else. I think you're right about those big trucks. Most drivers don't consider how hard those are to drive and to steer, or even to pick up speed.

Our son drives a semi and he would LOVE you.Cars are constantly cutting him short(guess they think semis with all those gears can stop on a dime). And getting into the lane they are 'supposed' to drive in before statey sees you is near impossible.
