Getting an education on the LIRR
I hope the LIRR's not going to start charging tuition or anything. You see, on the 7:04 express from Ronkonkoma to Penn, which I boarded after arriving on the shuttle from Medford, I got a lesson in physics. Or maybe geometry. It had to do with the volume that various objects occupy in space. What I learned, specifically, is that an average-sized woman carrying a huge purse actually takes up as much volume as an elephantine SCA. What would have been a decent enough ride into Penn had this woman not seen fit to carry a purse that was more akin to a steamer trunk turned out to be a miserable ride. The stupid thing kept infringing into my already scanty space, about the only consolation is that it wasn't full of hard and/or sharp objects. Of course there was no reason for this woman to carry the huge purse with her after she took her seat, there being a perfectly adequate luggage rack right above her head. I was most relieved when we finally got into Penn, and I didn't even mind that the next 1 train didn't mosey along for almost ten minutes and was horrendously mobbed when it finally arrived.
Getting home was much better, both in terms of subway waits and LIRR rider courtesy. I got to Penn pretty quickly thanks to a fast transfer at 14th and got the 5:22 to Ronkonkoma. It was on the usual Track 15 despite some last-minute track changes affecting other trains. A woman in her 50's sat next to me and spent much of the time talking on her cell phone. Nothing odd about that, but what was unusual is that on a couple occasions she got up and went into the nearby vestibule to talk. She probably was saying things she didn't want other people overhearing, unlike the woman yesterday with her job-related babbling, and the infamous case of the woman some months ago who spent 45 minutes discussing a truly disgusting medical condition. You see, courtesy is not completely dead on the LIRR ... circling the drain, to be sure, but still with a bit of life remaining. The ride to Ronkonkoma passed quickly, and even the wait for the shuttle didn't seem as long as usual.
Gym: Some nice bench press work tonight. 6 x 135, 4 x 185, 2 x 205, 6 x 225, 2 x 5 x 225, 3 x 235, 2 x 245, 2 x 8 x 185, (later) 2 x 4 x 225, 2 x 225. Last time I did 30 total reps at 225, tonight I did 31 at 225 or better. It was also nice to get six reps on my first set at 225. In addition to benching, I added a new exercise, overhead presses (also known as standing military presses). I haven't done these in ages, but decided to add them because my shoulder need a little extra work. To start, I did just a couple fairly light sets, 8 x 95, 8 x 105. I'm sure I'll be moving up soon. In addition to the benching and overhead presses, I also did cable rows, 4 x 8 x 180.
