First time in a while

It dawned on me today, as I was driving to Medford station to catch the shuttle, that I haven't sat in an M-3 single seat in several days.  Little did I realize that things were going to change.  As the shuttle pulled into Ronkonkoma the 6:56 Flatbush Avenue train was sitting on the opposite track, and yes it was an M-3 consist.  I was fortunate enough to grab a single seat - they're in high demand - and was able to enjoy an easy ride into Jamaica.  I was considering riding into Brooklyn but decided instead to get the 8:01 dual mode into Penn.  Missing a 1 train to Houston Street by seconds made me rethink the wisdom of that choice, briefly, but it was only two or three minutes until the next train arrived.  Usually, the closer the miss, the longer the wait until the next train.

I walked to Penn after work and joined one of the cows-at-the-slaughterhouse-chute half-moons on Track 19 to wait for the 5:41 to Ronkonkoma.  A man standing near me was babbling away to his companions about how hard it was to find a seat, how one has to rush like crazy onto the train the moment the door opens, and so on.  He sounded so pompous it was almost comical.  Being occupied with cell phone Tetris I couldn't get a look at him until the train actually arrived and I paused the game.  Because the door opened about five or six feet to the right of the main half-moon cluster Mr. Pompous got in a final complaint about how it would be really hard for him to find a prime seat.  I finally got a look at him and wasn't surprised - while he was not an SCA, he was another common Ronkonkoma type, namely a fat man with a goatee.  As I've noted before, fat men like goatees even though they accentuate their fatness.  At least he didn't have a shaved head, unlike many goatee'd fatties.  I found an aisle seat next to an average-sized man, and had an easy enough and on-time ride to Ronkonkoma and the shuttle.

Gym: I should have done squats tonight, actually yesterday would've been better, but for some reason I'm suffering from a lack of motivation to do them.  Can't explain why.  I might try some trap bar deadlifts, that exercise being more like squatting than normal deadlifting in terms of muscles involved.  In any event, I spent quite some time working on the speed bag, and then ran two miles on the treadmill at 6.0 mph.  That made nine total miles for the week.
