Today was quite a change from my typical gym routine, as for the first time in years I actually ran outdoors, doing a 1.2-mile lap of the running/walking/biking track at a nearby park.  Suffice to say that there's a huge difference in impact between running on a treadmill, the surface of which has some give to it, and running on asphalt.  Better sneakers are an absolute must if I'm going to run outdoors on even a semi-regular basis.  My current ones are okay for the treadmill but have too little cushioning for hard-surface running. What is interesting is that although I tried to maintain a relatively slow pace, to account for the greater impact and a couple of relatively mild rises, I ended up running the 1.2 miles in 12 minutes - the same 6.0 mph pace I use on the treadmill.  It must somehow be a "natural" pace for me.  In any event, because a total of 12 minutes of exercise isn't much, a couple of hours later I went to the gym and ellipted for 30 minutes (5,120 strides) and used the stationary cycle for 20 minutes (18.4 mph pace).  I had though beforehand about doing weights, but because I missed a few days of weights due to the tooth infection I think I'll just consider this as one of my periodic "off" cycles.  If I recall correctly the last weight-less week was five weeks ago, so it's time for another one.  My plan is to resume with weights on Wednesday.

Aren't you doing too much cardio for someone lifting weights?  I'd be afraid of burning muscle in the process.
