No fun for Hicksville riders

Getting back to work after a holiday weekend was a reasonably non-traumatic process thanks to decent behavior on the LIRR's part.  The shuttle was right on time at Medford, and once at Ronkonkoma I found an M-3 single seat on the 6:56 to Flatbush Avenue.   Not that it really mattered, as the car in which I was riding was barely half-full by the time we got to Jamaica.  It probably was due to people prolonging their weekends a bit, as it's rather early for the regular summertime ridership decline to have started.  We got to Jamaica a few minutes behind schedule, for no reason that I could tell, but there was enough time for me to transfer to the 8:01 dual mode to Penn.  We used the narrow Track 17 at Penn, which meant quite a human traffic jam at the stairways.  Unlike the 6:56, the dual mode was jammed, more than Track 17's too-narrow stairways could easily handle.  Speaking of human traffic jams, there was a huge crush of people at the subway turnstiles, for no apparent reason.  I thought there were some turnstiles out of service, but that didn't seem to be the case.  The wait for a 1 train to Houston Street was a reasonable one, no more than two or three minutes.

Getting to Penn after work was easy enough, with just minor waits at Houston Street and for the express transfer at 14th.  I got the 5:41 to Ronkonkoma, which was at about its normal ridership level as far as I could tell.  A very well-dressed woman of about 40 sat next to me.  As we passed through Queens the sky got steadily darker, to an almost unnatural level, as a major cool front passed through (it had been unusually warm during the day).  By the time we got to the first stop at Hicksville it was pouring like crazy.  The people who got off there, including the woman who had been sitting next to me, must've gotten totally soaked getting to their cars.  Many of the people who use the station park in a covered garage a block away, but there's no covered walkway from the station.  No one took the woman's place next to me, and by the time I got to Ronkonkoma and then Medford the rain had let up considerably.

Gym: a two-mile run on the treadmill at 6.0 mph, which put me at 6.5 miles for the week so far, followed by 20 minutes on the stationary cycle.  As I was getting close to the 20-minute mark I realized I was falling short of the desired 18-mph pace, so for the last couple of minutes I had to sprint (so to speak) like crazy in order to hit six miles in 20 minutes.

Poconos can be a tough commute.  If you leave Del Water Gap on any bus later than 5:20 you'll pay at the Lincoln Tunnel.

It is a lot of cardio, but I'm trying to cut about 10 to 15 pounds to get to my goal weight, and I'm willing to sacrifice some lifting ability during the process.  Actually it hasn't worked out badly, as the weights I can handle have gone down only a little since I started serious bodyweight-cutting several months ago.

I've heard horror stories about commuting from the Poconos.

Too much cardio.  Keep in mind, all these guys in the mags with six-pack abs and "routines" that tell you to do weights and cardio are juiced up big time.  You're a working guy with a long commute.

This commute does not sound much easier than the commute from the Poconos.
