Photo Trek: Downtown Winston-Salem, NC

Twisted Ladder

It has been a year...almost to the day since I last added anything to my Urban Room.  I have been wanting to photograph the city in which I live, but have had a very hard time finding a vantage point from which to shoot the skyline.  I thought I had a place all picked out based on a map of downtown.  Looking at the sky in the late afternoon, I saw what looked to be promising conditions for what I wanted to photograph.  At the last minute I packed up and headed to the location I had picked.

As in my other urban shots, I chose to use a tall parking deck to allow me to clear some of the ground clutter in the frame.  However, the concept that I had previsualized was not going to turn out this evening.  Nothing was in the places that I had wanted, and I was running out of light.  I checked every corner of the top floor to look for a composition that made sense.  I finally found one that put a street in the foreground, creating a strong diagonal.  The sun was well off to the left and out of the picture.  That was OK, because the clouds had about cleared so I wasn't going to get much color anyway.  Once I was happy with my composition, I stayed there for the duration of the setting sun.

Winston Skyline

It is worth mentioning that this was my first use of the 4x6 split ND filters from Singh Ray.  I used a 2 stop soft edge filter along with a polarizing filter to give the sky the nice blue tone, and still keep the exposure in the lower portions which were in the shadows.  I continue to be pleased with my new rig and look forward to some more landscape shots with the beautiful green mountains and a perfect blue sky.  Until the spring bloom, I will have to settle for this urban jungle that knows very few seasons.

The picture on display at the top of this entry is of a sculpture that resides in a small park nearby to the parking deck.  It caught my eye as I pulled into the deck, and I thought I would be worth a few frames after dark.  The lights put the emphasis on just the right parts.

Greg,  The twisted ladder I like but the urban jungle........hmmmmm But then I realized there are people that like city pictures to.  They can't all love barns and rustic fences and mountains and country.  I like any picture you take and how you explain about what you are doing with the camera.
