Reviews: Tamrac MX5398 Water Bottle in Padded Carrier

This looks like a frivolous purchase at $15.00, but if you are a photographer that goes on long hikes to get your photographs, it is quite worth it. Designed by Tamrac for their line of camera bags with the MAS system (Modular Accessory System), the carrier for the water bottle fits many of their camera bags. I have mine attached to the Tamrac Expedition 5. I went for years without carrying water on my hikes, which was not the smartest thing to do, but I was loaded down, and just didn't have room for a water bottle anywhere. When I saw this item in the B&H Photo catalog, I knew I had to have it.
Now, I don't have to worry about where to put the water bottle. It is snugly mounted to the side of the rucksack within easy reach of a thirsty arm. It mounts with a thick nylon strap that has both Velcro and snapping closures. Once attached, this pouch is very secure, and will fit not only the supplied Tamrac water bottle, but any number of standard sized water bottles. It is made with the same nylon that the Tamrac bags are and looks to be quite durable.
The supplied water bottle is a good size and holds plenty of water for a moderate hike. It is well sealed so there are no leaks. However, because it is so well sealed, you might have a hard time taking the cap off...I sure do. But, like I said, the pouch fits any number of standard water bottles, so feel free to stick your name brand spring water in there and head into the woods.
I feel that this is a very useful accessory, and I'm very happy that Tamrac came up with design. I wish their water bottle was a bit easier to open up, but it will probably loosen up in time. Because this is really such a basic item that doesn't really have any stand out features, I will have to rate it as a 3-star product, but that is not to say I wouldn't recommend it to a friend. I have really enjoyed having water with me on my hikes.

I can't even fathom going out on my journeys without water. I never used to be into the stuff, but now I am hooked. I have a Tamrac/MAS, and almost bought this very item, but then cheaped out and bought a Walmart special. What can I say? But hey, it works.

Great idea, to be honest I've never thought about a water bottle holder.

Some water would be a must for me on a hike. I drink lots of it. Having a water bag along is a good idea in my opinion. Helen

Hey Greg, what an idea for my water bottle when I hike the trails. I have a stupid little carrier thing that bangs against me so I am getting one like you have.
Thanks for sharing the information.
