Photo Trek: Linville Falls

Table Rock
After being under the weather last week and not getting the chance to go out on even a simple Trek, I was looking forward to this set of off days for another opportunity to get out and capture some new pictures. My first day off was a nice cloudy day with a slight possibility of drizzle in the forecast...Not better time to go and photograph a waterfall right?
Not feeling quite industrious enough to head out to Saluda, NC, I decided to revisit a previously shot location instead...Linville Falls. I have been to this waterfall many times over the last couple of years. Arguably, the most well known falls in North Carolina, Linville Falls has many different personalities, and several different views depending on which trails you hike. There is also a lesser known waterfall within the park boundaries.
Dugger's Creek Falls is an easy, not to mention short hike from the parking lot. It is a small, but extremely beautiful waterfall that can be viewed from either a wooden bridge, or from down at the water level. While not a large waterfall, I have been impressed with it every time I have ever seen it. Today was no different, and I was able to add two new images to my Waterfalls Room depicting this waterfall from both levels. While on the short hike, I came across a quote that really struck me...so much in fact, it now adorns the top of one of my gallery pages. The quote is by Marjorie Rowlings, and goes like this:
"...the earth may be borrowed but not bought, it may be used but not owned. It gives itself in response to love and tending, offers its seasonal flowering and fruiting. But we are tenants and not possessors, lovers and not masters..."
After completing the short hike to Dugger's Creek, I set my sights on the hardest hike in the park...down to the gorge floor. With all the rain that we have been getting recently, I was looking forward to seeing Linville in all of its glory. After the nearly mile long hike through some pretty rough terrain, I reached the gorge floor where I was rewarded with water levels that were up significantly from my previous visits.
The stream from the main falls was alive with rapids this time. My last Trek down this trail found the water level to be quite low, and the stream fairly serene. Not so this time. I had problems getting to my shooting positions because of the depth of the water. Fortunately, my boots had Gortex lining which kept my feet dry for the most part. However, there were times I went in deeper than I expected with cold and wet results. I figured it was worth it because for the first time, I was able to capture some very nice rapids as additional elements to the falls.
The photographs from this location can also be viewed in my Waterfalls Room. In all, I have added four new pictures to the gallery from this Trek, and five new pictures to my portfolio.
Look for some more new pictures to be added over the next several days. Depending on the weather, I have possibly two other Treks planned for this set of off days. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and I can get to them both.
