Photo Trek: Myrtle Beach, SC

Photo Trek: 03-28-2008 to 03-30-2008, Myrtle Beach, SC

A surprise Trek came up at the last minute with an unscheduled trip to the beach.  This was more a family trip than Photo Trek, so I wasn't there primarily for pictures, however, I did take my camera.  The forecast was quite promising before we left with warm sunny days and the chance of a storm Saturday night.  That was great, and I thought that there was a good chance that I could get a few pictures for the Coastal Room.

As luck would have it, there was a very bland and complete cloud cover over the beach the entire time we were there, and starting Saturday morning the winds were gusting to over 25 mph...not very conducive to photography.  I attempted to photograph a sunrise both mornings, but never actually saw the sun anywhere near the horizon...the clouds just got a bit brighter as the morning wore on.  I wasn't even fortunate enough to have any interesting or dramatic textures to the clouds.  I tried to find things around the beach to photograph in the existing conditions, but I had my mind set on a certain look, and I just couldn't find it.

Patio Chair

Just because the actual beach wasn't working out didn't mean I didn't have my eyes out for other subjects to photograph.  But with everything blending in with everything else tonality wise, I was on a hunt for color.  The only color I could find that was photo worthy was on our balcony.  There was a really nice burgundy wall with a tan floor.  The furniture was standard issue white plastic patio furniture.  While sitting in the living room, I was looking out and the simplicity drew my eyes in, and I figured it was worth a frame or two (or five).

The diffused light lent itself really well to this subject matter as I didn't want to blow the white of the chair out with highlights, and I wanted to be able to expose for the wall itself.  The ceiling blocked some of the light, allowing a nice diagonal element to enter into the composition with a muted beam of light.  Both the floor and the wall are richwith textures, and everything just flowed very nicely in this picture.

I am taking so much time in describing this picture because this is all I have to show (as far as the gallery goes) for the ten hours behind the wheel.  While there were probably pictures that could have been made in the prevailing conditions, none were able to convey the feeling that I wanted to get across.  Additional Coastal pictures will have to wait until the next trip to the coast.  For now, my one new addition to the gallery can be found in the Night and Creative Room.

Too bad the weather wouldn't cooperate with you.  Ten hours of driving..ugh!
I like your chair against the red background...at least you came away with something to add to your collection.

I love the chair photo but maybe you should have taken my suggested trip to Rock City this weekend instead ;-)
Hope you had a nice time -- we would all know more about it IF you had a personal journal! :-P
    Welcome home! Martha
