The Dan River Art Market
As you have read previously, I have been thinking about placing some of my photographs at the Dan River Art Market (DRAM) for about a week now. I have finally made my decision on the matter and will be submitting three framed photographs for the jury process.
For those that don't quite know what the jury process is all about, it is basically the selection committee for a showing. They have to approve your work before it is displayed in the store. While this is an added complication to getting your work shown, it is actually a very good thing that they do. This way, you are ensured that your work will be displayed with other high quality items that you don't mind being associated with. The jury process will take place on the first Monday of May (May 5th), and I should know something shortly thereafter.
I am starting slow since framing the prints is a bit on the expensive side. I have selected three prints for the initial jury process, and to test the sales waters at this location. To keep costs down, I am sticking with my standard 8x10 in prints matted in an 11x14 in frame. They will be set to retail at $100.00 at the DRAM if accepted.
My three choices are all centered around Hanging Rock State Park since that is the big tourist draw to the area. The majority of the customers of the DRAM come as a result of Hanging Rock. I figured that images from the park will sell better than some of my other pieces.

Jagged Precipice

New Life

Liquid Lace
I will see how these go, and will modify my selection as needed. I can have as many as ten items at a time, and would love to be able to stock that many at a time. Until I see how sales go, I can't afford to tie up close to $400.00 in inventory at one time. Wish me luck with my first brick and mortar retail location.
