Keeping your horizons level

Photos Copyright © 2006 G. Kiser

What you see above is a funny little contraption I have just recently purchased for use with my camera.  The green cube-like thing is a spirit level.  I purchased mine from B&H for just a few dollars.  This spirit level attaches to the hotshoe of the camera, and can be used in both vertical and horizontal compositions.

This simple piece of equipment has solved an ongoing problem of mine...level horizons.  Even though my tripod has two levels built in, I've realized that they are not that accurate, and still require some adjusting to get everything right in the camera.  No longer do I need to worry about that.  As long as I check my level before pressing the shutter release, I am assured a level horizon every time, with no need to rotate the picture in post processing.
