The Raiders came through on Sunday and beat the Washington Redskins in another rematch of the most memorable football game of my life: Jan. 22, 1984 Super Bowl XVIII. It's a far cry from those days as both teams are not even a shadow of what they used to be. Everytime I see an NFL Films special featuring the Raiders from the late 70's and early 80's, I get that spine-tingling feeling. The hairs on the back of my neck rise and my blood starts
pumping. The fresh feeling of nostalgia invades my world, and that's when I realize that like most Raider fans and Raider owner Al Davis, I'm getting excited over something that no longer is. We haven't lived through a sustained run of success since then. It's really sad. The past is just that: the past.
I have to be a man about things and tip my hat to Kerry Collins for his second half play on Sunday. I'm the first to bash on him because of his horribly inconsistent play, but I'll also be the first to say that he did well in the second half. It was a refreshing change for once. I like that the Raiders finally came out on top of a close game. Hopefully, the Raiders can turn the corner and build on this.
What can I say about the Defense? Little by little they're getting better. They're making big plays, and they're giving the offense a chance to win. If there is one thing that is disappointing, it's the fact that the offense was supposed to be posting 35 points a game. We have yet to see that. Overall, it was a good win for Norvy boy and the Raiders.
Oh, one other thing: Because I live in San Diego, I didn't get to see Derrick Burgess' sack and forced fumble to end the game. "Because of contractual obligations with the National Football League, we will momentarily be switching to coverage of the Buffalo Bills and San Diego Blunderbolts" That's the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. To top it off, that second game was so boring, I don't know why they even televised it.
