RebukeTheWorld's News Briefing 6/15/06: Mount Soledad - Iran- Amy McElhenney

THE CROSS IS GOING DOWN
The 43-foot white cross is going down. San Diego's Mount Soledad is a historic landmark since the early 1900s. By order by a federal judge in California, it will see its removal. The ACLU won the debate. This monument has six concentric walls that will hold more than 3,000 black granite plaques, honoring all war veterans that are living and deceased. The cross which marked a memorial for the heroes in the Korean War will be removed. What are your thoughts? My first thought's were if this memorial was a sculptor of artistic nudity, an abstract design, a flat wall with names on it or anything else, the historic monument would remain. True? I guess history is only valuable if there are no crosses on it. Wow, that should limit the artist's and sculptor's of today. Maybe a new law will come into place to support that who knows, but I do wonder what kind of impact this decision will have on other historic landmarks with other religious under tone's? Maybe all Buddhist monuments should go down. Maybe all Jewish monuments should go down. The simple fact is a cross is still an image of art and a cross built over 100 years ago, is going down. For those of you who enjoy art, check out that photo from www.michaelworth.com. It is very pretty and surely will be missed, no matter one's take.
If you disagree with this because of your passion for art or your passion for honoring historic monuments of because of one's right to religious views or other reasons- Please spend 20 seconds and sign your name. You may or may not agree with ACLJ but if you believe this piece of art should remain, you can sign the petition at their site, check the box for no subscription to ACLJ and just make your vote count on this issue.
IRAN
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert made this quote last week in reference to the impending negotiations with Iran. I thought this was quite profound. Prime Minister Olmert said,"I hope that the Iranian will not misinterpret it, that they will understand that it comes out of enormous strength, not out of weakness and that they will respond to it."
Iran offered this- "The language of threats contradicts the language of negotiations," said Ali Larijani. I thought this was profound as well. I agree with him partially but the problem is, Iran is being asked by the world to offer a compromise that could benefit them and the whole world. Hopefully, during these negotiations a shared responsibility of ownership of the principles in one's right, will belong to all involved and not just to just one's country.
Abu Ayyub al-Masri or his ghost name- Abu Hamzaal-Muhajer, might be the new al-Qaida leader. Guess what? When we take him out too, another will pop up. As a matter of fact, rebels who do evil will continue forever but seeking justice is a forever plight as well. So, if Abu Ayyub Al-Masri is the new leader, we have one more advantage. He hasn't been a leader for long, so he will be easier to catch.
Amy McElhenney
AOL news cited a news story about Amy McElhenney, a 25 year old teacher who had a relationship with her 18 year old student. She could face 20 years in prison for doing what all adults do everyday- Pursing a relationship with another adult. I know our legal system needs to enable those adult decisions and say its improper to date someone who is your superior in a professional establishment, but it's just another disabling assessments courts mandate. I have never agreed that any law should state an employer can't date his or her boss. I have never agreed that a college professor can't date an adult student on campus. Our courts shouldn't be allowed to play baby-sitter. If you choose to date your boss, that's your right. It's not always wise to do so because it can make the environment uncomfortable, if the relationship doesn't work out but guess sometimes it works out. Adults know the pro's and con's and the success stories of secretaries marrying the boss isn't getting hit up with lawsuit's of accountability either. These things happen all the time. What makes news is when the adult makes a choice and then wants to turn around the sue the superior because of harassment by the other. There are times where this measure of judgment requires a legal system to step in because harassment should be in the courts. I don't believe datinginthe work place is anyone's business but the two adults involved. AmyMcElhenny shouldn't be held accountable for anything because she and the other 18 year old adult made the choice of yes and that's their business.
