RebukeTheWorld's News Briefing 6/09/06:Interleuki n- AIDS potential Cure, Shingles, Lady hits her vet
Interleukin
Good and Exciting news for AIDS patients! A naturally occurring protein called interleukin-15(IL-15) has shown to restore tissue CD4+ T cells, when antiretroviral drugs are also being used. When CD4+ T cells are killed in the tissues then the patient develops AIDS. So, to be able to restore these cells is a leap and bound towards a cure for AIDS. "What we now need to better understand is how populations of these crucial T-cells are regulated," Dr. Louis Pickler at OHSU said.
Shingles
My son got Shingles last month. He is only five and had a mild case on his face. It's pretty rare for children to get this especially if they've have their immunizations, which my son had. A lady from Kaiser involved in a research study on the new cases of Shingles, came to my house and took samples. What is Shingles? Shingles or herpes zoster, is a common viral infection of the nerves, which results in a painful rash of small blisters on an area of skin anywhere on the body. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), this year more than 500,000 people will develop shingles. There is no cure for the disease but the biggest setback for this. PHN. Its a continuous, chronic pain that a person feels even after the skin lesions have healed. Outside from being completely ostracized from my family for a week(hehe), the lesions are gone and thank goodness.
