Undefeated and heavy favorite horse, Barbaro, was pulled out of the race after suffering injury. His absence allowed Bernardini to take the 132nd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday.

After his Preakness win, the colt is not definitely set for the Belmont Stakes in three weeks, but trainer Tom Albertrani expects a decision in a few days.

Albertrani, has another Belmont starter in Deputy Glitters, who finished eighth in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness.

Bernardini was the surprise winner of the Preakness, beating Sweetnorthernsaint by 5 1/4 lengths, the race overshadowed by the serious injury at the start to Barbaro. The Derby winner broke three bones in his right rear leg and was in surgery Sunday fighting for his life.

Barbaro sustained “life-threatening injuries” after breaking bones above and below his right rear ankle at the start of the Preakness Stakes.

Late Sunday afternoon, surgeons announced that Barbaro’s over seven-hour surgery was completed, and the classic winner was kept in the intensive care unit at the New Bolton Center and standing.

At this moment “he is extremely comfortable in the leg,” said Dr. Dean Richardson. The colt’s surgeon declared he’s never worked on so many catastrophic injuries to one horse.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, recently installed as the morning-line favorite for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes (gr. I), worked out on Thursday at Fair Hill Training Center in his final prep for the classic at Pimlico Racecourse.

The colt galloped strongly and blew out a quarter of a mile in an unofficial :24 1/5.

With assistant trainer Peter Brette aboard, Barbaro was accompanied to the track at about 7:45 a.m. by trainer Michael Matz aboard his stable pony. After breaking off from Matz at the quarter pole, Barbaro worked the quarter mile, for which he was timed in :24 1/5.

Brette called the workout “super” and said it is customary for the colt to gallop strongly before a “blow out” prior to a race.

Owned and bred by Lael Stables, Barbaro will be seeking his seventh career victory, with no defeats, when he faces eight other 3-year-olds Saturday. The colt, who also won the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Holy Bull (gr. III), is scheduled to be shipped Pimlico at mid-day Friday.

The runaway winner of the Kentucky Derby, Barbaro, will attempt to win the second leg of the Triple Crown next Saturday, May 20st when he runs in the Preakness Stakes from Pimlico Racecourse. Barbaro virtually made his rivals eat his dust when he won the Derby by 6 1/2 lengths over Bluegrass Cat. Two of his rivals in that race who will be returning to take him on are Brother Derek and Sweernorthensaint, both Derbt disappointments. Notably absent will be the Derby 3rd placer Steppenwolfer whose connections announced he will skip the Preakness but will run the Belmont Stakes.

Will Barbaro, despite his barbaric name, be the first horse in 27 years to win all three jewels? Will this be the year we finally have another Triple Crown winner? Place a wager on it in the Bodog Sportsbook HERE. One thing is for certain, Barbaro and trainer Mike Martz will surely give their best shot.

3 more days until we can all see for ourselves if Barbaro is truly the real thing or simply a horse who got lucky in the right place at the right time almost two weeks ago. The field is official with 9 competitors all vying for the $1,000,000 prize, none harder than the namesake for Conan the Barbarian who is sitting at an overwhelming 1-1 odds. Brother Derek is the Regisuzuki’s favorite at 3/1, is he worth it? He is, after all a superb horse before that monumental Derby collapse. Sweetnorthernsaint 4/1 may be the best place to put your money, or at least some handicappers would have you believe that.

So cook up some Crab Cakes and drink up the Black Eyed Susans, it’s going to be a VERY exciting 2 minutes! More than 100,000 fans are expected to turn out this week at Pimlico for the $1 million Preakness Stakes, and a big part of any horse race is being able to see the horses up close before the race.

Six Kentucky Derby winners in the past nine years have captured the Preakness, four by 1 lengths or more.

Thats a good omen for Barbaro, who crushed the opposition winning the 132 nd Kentucky Derby while ending a 50-year losing streak by 3-year-olds resting five weeks or longer after their final prep.

Needles was off six weeks before his triumph at Churchill Downs in 1956. Both had won the Florida Derby. However, Needles was edged by Fabius in the Preakness.

Barbaro likely will face 14 fewer horses than he defeated at Louisville when he won by 6 lengths, the largest margin since 46 when Triple Crown champ Assault scored by eight lengths at the 1 miles.

Only two Derby also-rans will try him in the 131 st Preakness: Brother Derek, who rallied from 10th after a mile to dead-heat for fourth with Jazil, and Sweetnorthernsaint, who pressed the pace in third until the stretch when he tired and finished seventh.

The Preakness has had fewer than 10 starters just once in the last 15 years when eight ran in 00. Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, who scared away all by seven challengers, was upset at 1-5 by Red Bullet, who skipped Americas Race.

Bernardini, Hemingways Key and Like Now will try to become only the second horse to win the Preakness after skipping the Derby since 83 when Deputed Testimony performed the feat.

Bernardini won this years Withers. Like Now ran second in the Lexington while Hemingways Key was eighth.

Two other horses being considered for the Preakness are more likely to run in stakes on the undercard.

Trainer Bob Baffert decided against entering any of his Derby horses. Baffert said Point Determined, ninth, and Bob and John, 17th, would be pointed toward the Belmont Stakes on June 10.

Bluegrass Cat, the Derby runner-up, and Steppenwolfer, third, also are expected to run in the Belmont.

The largest winning margin in the Preakness came in 04 when Smarty Jones cruised to an 11 -length victory, besting Funny Cides record of 9 lengths in 03.

Most of the previous races since Silver Charm triumphed by a head in 97 were closer. In fact, only three horses had shared the onetime record of eight lengths: Little Current, 74; Bold, 51; and Buddhist,1889.

This years Preakness should be tighter. I like the undefeated Barbaro despite the shorter layoff.

Sweetnorthernsaint and Brother Derek should bounce back and be tougher at 1 3/16 miles. Either could win.

Ironically, the largest margin of 10 lengths stood for 130 years after the inaugural Preakness in 1873. The aptly named Survivor set that record.

BALTIMORE (AP) — The home of the Preakness Stakes is eerily quiet this week, the result of a quarantine that has raised questions whether troubled Pimlico Race Course can regroup in time to host the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

An outbreak of equine herpesvirus at the 136-year-old track forced three horses to be euthanized and led several states to ban the shipment of horses into or from Maryland. Although a horse was linked to the virus Tuesday at nearby Laurel Park, there have been no new cases at Pimlico since Jan. 19 and the track intends to lift the self-imposed quarantine next Wednesday.

But can Pimlico ultimately replace the cautionary yellow tape currently surrounding several barns with the bright yellow Black-eyed Susans that symbolize the Preakness?

"I have no concern about that whatsoever," Lou Raffetto, chief operating officer of the Maryland Jockey Club, said Tuesday. "Given the nature of this virus, I don’t think this will be an issue by the time we start the spring meet in April."

The virus, known as EHV-1, often produces respiratory problems and fever, and it can cause... Pimlico Says Preakness Will Run As Scheduled

After nearly going down when bumped by Scrappy T as the field turned for home, Afleet Alex went on to win the Preakness (gr. I) Saturday at Pimlico. It was the fifth straight year the favorite won the Preakness but it might have been the most dramatic of any of those runnings.

Coming toward the stretch, Ramon Dominguez shook his whip left-handed at Scrappy T and he bore out into Afleet Alex and Jeremy Rose. Race favorite Afleet Alex stumbled and nearly went down. But he righted himself, straightened away, and drove to the wire to win the middle leg of the Triple Crown.

There are several key stories to Afleet Alex. One is that he has been connected to Alex's Lemonade Stand, which raises money for juvenile cancer research and has been one of the heartwarming stories of this Triple Crown season. The other is that his trainer, Tim Ritchey, has sent Afleet Alex to the track twice each morning, a very unorthodox style.

It was indeed a sweet revenge for Afleet Alex after a sorry loss at the Derby. Entering the Preakness as the morning-line favorite, the Arkansas Derby winner thus became the fifth straight favorite to win the Preakness. Unlike last year, the racing community will now travel to Elmont, New York without any hopes of a Triple Crown sweep. Derby winner Giacomo rallied late to hit the board and finished a long third.

Afleet Alex was the first horse to arrive at Pimlico and obviously he thrived over the local surface and the amount of training he received. He was full of run throughout the Preakness.

After a mile in 1:36.04, Afleet Alex completed the distance in 1:55.04. He paid $8.60, $5, and $3.20, while Scrappy T returned $11.20 and $5.80. Giacomo paid $4.80 to show.

Now, the son of Northern Afleet now sets his sight on the last jewel of the Triple Crown. He will stay for a couple of more days at Pimlico before traveling to Elmont, New York. After a near fall, trainer Tim Ritchey said that the Preakness winner is in good condition and will be available for the Belmont on June 11.

The complete order of finish was: Afleet Alex, Scrappy T, Giacomo, Sun King, High Limit, Noble Causeway, Greeley's Galaxy, Malibu Moonshine, Closing Argument, High Fly, Hal's Image, Wilko, Galloping Grocer, Going Wild.

If Giacomo adds the second jewel of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown to his resume in Saturday's Preakness, he'll do it from an outside post.

A full field of fourteen horses were entered in the Preakness on Wednesday; thanks to the luck of the random draw to choose the order of post selection, Funny Cide will leave from post No. 13.

In the Kentucky Derby, Giacomo's connections had the best pick and selected the tenth post. Under Mike Smith, the Kentucky-bred son of Holy Bull was able to work out a dream trip in the Derby. He caught Afleet Alex and Closing Argument down the stretch and held on for a ½ length victory.

Getting favorable early position might not be as easy in the Preakness. Smith will have to figure out a way to keep from getting hooked on the outside in the relatively short run to Pimlico's sharp first turn.

In the history of the Preakness, there have been only five starters from Post 13. History is against Giacomo because Post 13 hasn't produced a single Preakness winner. An outside post doesn't mean Giacomo can't win Saturday, it's just that there is less margin for error.

Giacomo will meet nine other horses he defeated in the Derby: Closing Argument, Afleet Alex, High Fly, Sun King, Noble Causeway, Greeley's Galaxy, Going Wild, Wilko, High Limit and six newcomers.

His biggest challenge is expected to come from morning-line favorite Afleet Alex, trained by Tim Ritchey. Ever since the Derby on May 7, Ritchey decided on sending Derby second runner-up and beaten second favorite Afleet Alex early to the Preakness. Since May 11 and prior to the draw, the son of Northern Afleet has been all alone at Pimlico stakes barn.

Afleet Alex's Post position 12 has produced two winners (Kalitan in 1917 and Pleasant Colony in 1981) and three seconds in 21 runnings with at least a dozen starters.

Meanwhile, the luck of the Triple Crown gods continued to flow toward Closing Argument. Hours after he arrived on the backstretch at Pimlico Race Course to downright royal fanfare, the Kentucky Derby runer-up wound up with the eminently favorable Post 7 for the $1 million Preakness Stakes on Saturday. He was also installed as the third favorite atop a field of 14.

Since 1970, seven Preakness winners have started from underneath that lucky number, more than any other during that span. The list includes , Smarty Jones (2004), Sunday Silence (1989), Summer Squall (1990), Timber Country (1995) and Silver Charm (1997). All flourished via forwardly placed stalking trips from Post 7 while annexing the second jewel of thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown.

Greatly enhancing the chances that Closing Argument will again get to sit, stalk and have the opportunity to streak late in the Preakness is the fact that he will be far away from the watchful eyes of Giacomo and Afleet Alex who draw post 13 and 12, respectively. If the two outside horses guard each other's moves, Closing Argument can barrel his way through the field and unleash his strong finishing kick.

Along with his Preakness post position, that's a row of sevens, which spells jackpot in just about any gambling house. Even one ruled by the baffling luck of the Triple Crown gods.

RegiSuzuki's Prediction: If Afleet Alex runs the outside lane of the course at the backstretch, he's got the best chance of winning the race. He's in perfect condition and has been in the track longer than any other contender. Look out again for Closing Argument. It will be a toss-up between Afleet Alex and Closing Argument but the former this time, will get the better of their matchup. Alex Scott will surely be smiling from heaven after the Preakness.

Giacomo got the 13th pick for the post position draw later Wednesday at Pimlico Race Course. The horse was a 50-1 longshot for the Derby and won the race by 1/2 lengths.

The other horses in the race, in order of their post position draw, are: MALIBU MOONSHINE, HIGH FLY, NOBLE CAUSEWAY, GREELEY'S GALAXY, SCRAPPY T, HAL'S IMAGE, CLOSING ARGUMENT, GALLOPING GROCER, WILKO, SUN KING, HIGH LIMIT, AFLEET ALEX, GOING WILD.

Giacomo was expected to be installed as the favorite for the Preakness, but intriguingly, the Holy Bull son was only installed as 4th favorite. Giacomo will be trying to become the 32nd Kentucky Derby champion to win the Preakness. Triple Crown winner Sir Barton started the trend by winning the Derby and Preakness four days apart in 1919.

Giacomo's victory in the Kentucky Derby was not enough to earn him the favorite's role for the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. Giacomo, trained by John Shirreffs, was installed as the 6-1 fourth choice in the morning line by Pimlico oddsmaker Frank Carulli. They made Derby 3rd placer Afleet Alex as the 5-2 favorite in a field of 14 3-year-olds entered Wednesday night for the 1 3/16th-mile Preakness.

Afleet Alex, who again gets rider Jeremy Rose, was third in the Derby after being a second favorite in the Derby morning-line behind beaten favorite Bellamy Road. Trained by Tim Ritchey, the son of Northern Afleet will break from gate 12.

Giacomo will leave from the No. 13 post Saturday. Shirreffs had no choice but to pick the unlucky(?) 13 gate forhis Kentucky Derby champion. But owner Jeremy Moss said that his camp doesn't care about the morning odds because his horse simply doesn't know about odds.

Derby runner-up Closing Argument made a gem at the draw by picking up post no. 7. It must be remebered that Giacomo won the Derby after charging from post no. 10 out of 20 positions. With him on the middle lane, the Kiaran McLaughlin trained horse now has the chance of sizing up opponents on his left and right sides.

A full field of 14 3-year-olds was entered for Saturday's 1 3-16th-mile race, the first time since 1992 the Preakness drew the maximum entries. High Fly, 10th in the Derby, was the second choice at 9-2 and Derby runner-up Closing Argument was the third choice at 5-1. High Fly drew the No. 2 post, and Closing Argument leaves from the No. 7 gate.

Ten Derby runners are also running in the Preakness. Nick Zito goes with three starters (High Fly, Sun King and Noble Causeway) while there are four newcomers, all of whom are longshots.
