Monday Morning Question

From Krissy; What is the most memorable activity you did with your family as a child?
Wow...that is a loaded question. We did so much as a family when we were kids. Let me list a few...
1. Summer vacations to San Diego and Disney Land. I think that is when and where I developed my love for the ocean.
2. Camping and fishing. Mom hated it but we loved it.
3. Easter Egg hunts. My Dad would hide eggs all day long for us. Over and over again. He also taped money to the eggs, a tradition I carry out now.
4. Pool parties. My folks loved to have pool partie and I always remember us having a pool, probably from the time I was 9 years old we had a real pool in the backyard.
5. Friday night football games and parties. My Dad was a local high school football coach and I LOVED watching his games. If they won it meant a party afterwards and us kids got to stay up really late.
6. Drive-In movies! Mom and Dad would let me and my brother sit on top of the roof of the car to watch the movie. We thought that was the coolest. Mom would pop a big batch of popcorn (the old fashion way on the stove!) and Dad would put it in a big brown paper bag and shake it up with salt. It was better than theater popcorn.
7. Disney night. Every Saturday night a disney movie would come on tv. It wasn't on all the time like it is now. We would get out our beanbags (mine was yellow and brother's was brown) and as a family we would watch the movie together. I recall popcorn then too.
I guess that is enough for now. We had a lot of fun family times, and still do when we are all together. I was very lucky to have such a great childhood.

Oh, it sounds like you had so much fun. Your parents sounded like they were so much fun when you were growing up. Not that they are not fun now, LOL!

#5. That was something I always enjoyed doing ... not as a child, but as an adult in Carolina ... it was filled with so much atmosphere ..!
#6. I still yearn for those ..! There is one in the Detroit area, near my Dad ... but I can't drive and haven't anyone to take me ..!
#7. We would watch Disney on Sunday nights ... Wide World of Dinsey? Any way, great memories ..! -
Sounds like you had a fun-filled, action packed childhood. I can remember going with my friend Barbara (she & I still go to movies) and her mom. Her mom would make popcorn, put it in a brown grocery bag and off we'd go to town to see a Saturday afternoon movie. In those days, you could bring your own popcorn into the theater. Now Barbara and I fell like criminals when we smuggle in a can of soda. We take straws and wrap the can in napkins so if the theater staff pass by it doesn't look quite so suspicious. I'm a health writer for msnbc.com, and I stumbled across your blog while researching a story. I'm writing about new research that confirms what everybody pretty much knew anyway -- that parents are stricter with the oldest kids, while the younger ones get away with everything!
I've talked to some experts and some parents, but I'd love to talk to some people who can reminisce about their own childhoods. Did the youngest kid in your family seem to get away with more?
If you're interested, e-mail me at melissa.dahl@msnbc.com, and we'll set up a time to chat. It should only take 10-15 minutes, and it'll be a fun conversation!
Thanks so much,
Melissa Dahl
