Ghetto Beach
We spent the day yesterday at the beach. Well if you can call it a beach...we call it "ghetto beach!" It is so redneck it isn't funny! Jeff Foxworthy would have a hay day there.
It is just off the highway in St. Pete (Carol probably knows it) Just on the other side of the Gandy bridge...people with their pick-up trucks, beat up van's, jeeps, dogs, bbq's, motorcycles, small boats, rafts and lounge chairs having fun in the water.
I've written about this place before, where you can literally back your vehicle up in between trees right to the waters edge. It reminds me more of a lake but I guess it really is the ocean, or bay?
We took some fried chicken and fixings to have our lunch there. Gabby brought her net, she was all stoked about catching some small fishies. We took our umbrella and 3 chairs...everyone sets their chairs right in the water. I waded out up to my thighs and started seeing fish every where! That never happens in San Diego...the most I have seen in the water there is sea weed.
I was so excited. I started taking pics of the water. There was this one fish (actually about 12 of them) he was so cool looking. Maybe someone can tell me what kind it is. He was super long and skinny, almost looked clear in color and had a long, long nose. He was the most friendly kind, I found some shrimp (I think they are shrimp) someone had left behind and tossed them out to the fish...they gobbled it up.
Once the fish were spotted in the water Gabby would have nothing to do with it! She wouldn't hardly get her ankles wet...she totally freaked out. LOL. A guy next to us caught a sting ray while fishing and she headed to the back seat of the truck after that. She said she wanted to go to the real beach in Clearwater. LOL.
Even with her pouting we still had a blast. Michael and I swam around and he had fun tossing shrimp guts on me. Brat! The interesting people made the place all the more fun, I don't think I would take my parents or out of town visitors there but we will go back for sure. Next time I am taking a fishing pole!

sorta like this fish?

Hahaha, yep, Robin, you definitely did your thing with the locals at Gandy Beach -- and that's Tampa Bay there. The only ocean in Florida is off the east coast - the Atlantic, of course. On the west coast (two miles from my house), that's the Gulf of Mexico. I've lived here 25 years and NEVER gone TO that redneck beach, but of course, we drive by it all the time! :) It looks like you had fun anyway - every beach around here has SOMETHING to offer - I'm not surprised you had fun!!!
Now the stingrays are something you DO have to think about living around here. You must all learn to do the "Stingray Shuffle," and then you won't have to worry another minute about them. Stingrays lay at the bottom half covering themselves with sand. IF you step directly on them, their tail containing the BARB (stinger thingee) will get you. So what you need to do when entering any water around here is to shuffle your feet - drag them as you walk in. That alerts the stingrays and they will move to get out of your way. They only sting when startled!! So tell Gabby, there's nothing to fear as long as you drag your feet in the water...
Have a great week,
:) Carol
