Sin City Turf Wars: CES vs. AVN, Barbara Walters vs. Ellen!
It's a new year and so, time to introduce a new face -- the bountifully beautiful and deliciously delightful Destiny Davis. Read on for more about Destiny below...
This is the time of year when two annual conventions -- one of them among the biggest in Vegas, if not the country, and the world -- get a stranglehold on our city: the Consumer Electronics Show and the Adult Video News Entertainment Expo. Both offer dazzling displays of delights, as you can imagine ... with a few distinct differences.
Firstly, in the straight sales booths of CES, its all about "time-shifting" and gadgets-galore this year. In plain-speak that means you get to watch video and listen to music anytime you want anywhere you wish. For example call up an old episode of 'Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous' right now (hmmmm) or play 'Good Morning America' tonight or 'The Tonight Show' in the morning. And just as important is where you'll be able to play it -- from the any room in the house to the car to the plane. Despite runaway success with iPods, cell-phones and little laptops, regular television sets aren't quite finished with yet, but the computer is going to change the way you program it; it'll literally be a marvelous marriage with the 52" HD plasma performing everything stored on the home computer to act as your very own network. The age of Me-TV has arrived! AOL is right at the forefront of all this technology, and as you know from our very own Vegas Videos you can watch our All-Access and Counter Intelligence shows anytime you want by clicking right here! Coming soon on CityGuide, even more Vegas programs and stars!
Dozens of celebrities from Hollywood's movie and music industries are being flown in over the next four days to perform and attend and we'll have the full wrap-up early next week. Some ofthe expected names include Dana Carvey, George Thorogood, Butch Vig (Garbage), Stevie Wonder, Goo Goo Dolls, Baltimore Orioles' Brian Roberts, NFL stars Dan Marino, Troy Aikman, Steve Young , Boomer Esiason, Roger Staubach, and NASCAR driver Kyle Busch. MTV's reality series 'Cheyenne,' which tracks 15-year-old Cheyenne Kimball's search for singing stardom will actually be filming her when she performs today at the SONY booth. For those of you scratching your head and saying "Cheyenne who?" just remember, back in 2003 she won NBC's 'America's Most Talented Kid' contest, when she was only 12...
Meantime, you might be fascinated to know that the very first VCR was introduced at CES 35 years ago in 1970, it wasn't until 1981 that the CD player first debuted, HD TV arrived in 1998 and the X-Box in 2001. Last year, the big news was internet-delivered television (IPTV) and this year it will be the replacement of DVDs as the next generation of high-capacity storage multi-media discs.
Over in the sexy sales booths of AVN, it's all about ... well, there's just some electronic gadgets we wont write about here!!! But the porno princes and princesses utilize every modern technological advance from the "straight" electronics convention to launch newer fresher ways to deliver their steamy x-rated materials (perhaps the CES chiefs find inspiration here, too?). During the Sexpo, film cameras will also conclude shooting the Skin City documentary which includes everybody from X-movie star and sometime Vegas resident Jenna Jameson to our goodtimes Mayor Oscar Goodman! It is a documentary, after all...
Just like the Oscars and the Grammys, the adult film world also has its own awards show that'll take place Saturday night at The Venetian, and will attract all the stars of the erotic epoch. Watch right here Monday for the photos we can show!
In the meantime, I'd like to shine the spotlight on an extraordinarily beautiful blonde who lives right here in Vegas: Destiny Davis. She's the 19-year-old curvaceous cutie who wound up as Playboy's 2005 Miss January. Destiny is a good friend, and when I took her for dinner to the new Alex restaurant at the WYNN (where we met super chef Alex Stratta, below), she told me in-between
photographic poses and talent tours, she's still studying here at UNLV for her MBA! Not just beautiful, but brainy, too! Remarkable. Playboy fans know this is the month you get to vote for Playmate of the Year and there's nothing I, or all of Vegas for that matter, would love than to have you cast your vote here for her to win.
I just can't picture a war of words between veteran broadcaster Barbara Walters and newish talk show host, comedienne Ellen Degeneres. Well that's what it apparently "degenerated" to in the hallowed halls of Disney -- the parent producers of both the ABC star and the syndicated host. Turns out that Barbara's daytime show 'The View' wanted to return to Vegas for the 2nd time in 3 years, situating themselves right on the Strip at Caesars Palace for a weeklong sweeps series starting February 20. Unbeknownst to Barbara and her co-horts Meredith Viera, Star Jones Reynolds, Joy Behar and Elisabeth Hasselbeck was that Ellen's producers had the exact same idea -- even planning to plant themselves in the same spot. Somehow, news of the dueling divas' plans reached the upper executive echelons, and one of them had to be told "No can do." You simply cant have two TV shows from the same" family" claiming Vegas and its stars for sweeps -- it wouldn't look right for the ratings. Poor Ellen was told she had to skip the trip to the Strip this time around. So Barbara remains our Queen and Ellen will play lady in waiting. (Last year when The View came to Caesars poolside, I appeared on the show- and maybe again this year.) For Vegans who want to watch it here live, remember each broadcast starts at 8 AM our time (with seating by 7 AM) to meet the 11 AM Eastern Standard Time airing!
