The Red Rock Resort and Casino's opening party featured what had to be the biggest and most extraordinary fireworks
display ever seen in one place, and at a cool estimated $1 million, certainly
the most expensive! There were exploding starbursts in every color of the
rainbow and sparklers with shapes of hearts, queens, diamonds and spades plus
dollar signs -- the likes of which have never been seen previously. The
fireworks were set off in a 360-degree circle surrounding the entire resort,
which also had flamethrowers blasting from the roofs.
New billion-dollar off-Strip Red Rock resort owners Lorenzo
and Frank Fertitta III were so insistent
that their six-hour opening gala be super-special from start to finish, they
ordered “spare no expense -- make it the biggest and the best.” Now I’ve been
to some pretty impressive and mind-blowing bashes around the world, and these
guys actually pulled it off. They totally beat the lot of them! They shelled
out another estimated $1 million just on pop-superstar Sting (pictured below) and his band for a
private concert!! And if the estimated $350,000 bill -- at wholesale yet -- for
Dom Perignon champagne was correct, then you have a good idea as to how
brilliant the food and beverages were also.
There was an all-star turn out for the premiere night. Even rival hoteliers from the Strip, spying on the newcomer, graciously acknowledged the luxurious resort was now a formidable rival -- even 13-miles away. (Click here to see our Luxe Life opening day photo tour of the spa resort)
The VIPs attending included Andre Agassi and his tennis-wife Steffi Graff, actress Stormy Daniels who appeared topless in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Nate Morris from Boys II Men, fight promoter Bob Arum, hoteliers Elaine Wynn, Marc Schorr and Andrew Pascal from theWynn, Bill Wiedner from The Venetian, Robert Earl and Mike Mecca from the

nightclub partner Jason Strauss, Las Vegas Marathon chairman Bernie Yuman, and

Playboy’s reigning queen, Christie Hefner.
She told me that her new Playboy Club at the Palms now won’t open until early September since she wants it to be “beyond perfection.” “We haven‘t had a Playboy Club opened in so long, this just has to be the best it could be so it can start a wave of them around the world,” she explained to me.

Then supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, who own the Cherry nightclub at the hotel, also threw their own opening night club party Saturday (see photo album) with another slew of celebrities attending including Jim Belushi, Anne Heche old friend Harry Hamlin, Kenny G. and my rock pals Vince Neil (with wife Leah) and Tommy Lee. Get the feeling we’ve got more celebrities partying here than live in 90210?

We’re also host this week to 170,000 conventioneers attending the National Association of Broadcasters meetings that began yesterday with everybody from Oprah Winfrey to Regis Philbin attending. So with all the functions, friends and business pals in town, it’s horrendously hectic out here!
Congratulations to Charles Gibson, co-anchor on ABC's Good Morning America for nearly 20-years -- who last night was presented with the 2006 lifetime achievement award for his contribution to electronic journalism. Regis will be inducted into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame today and three renowned news anchors Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather and the late Peter Jennings will be honored with Distinguished Service Awards. Shepard Smith, Fox News anchor, moderated a broadcasters’ panel on the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. Famed theatrical director Hal Prince arrived in Vegas yesterday to start the first day of rehearsals of Phantom of the Opera -- the Las Vegas Spectacular -- with the full cast of 43 performers. Venetian Hotel owner Sheldon Adelson (the show premieres there June 24) stopped in to meet the cast and the director.

People are asking if it’s true that golf champion Tiger Woods won half-a-million dollars playing blackjack at MGM… At the Red Rock opening, Venetian honcho Bill Wiedner told me that there’ll be a duplicate of their Las Vegas Sands in the new Eurovegas gaming complex being built on the Austrian-Czechoslovakia border 40 km from Vienna……Sports Illustrated cover girl and supermodel Rebecca Romjin -- formerly married to John Stamos -- created a water ballet using the fountains at The Bellagio to film a documentary titled Wet Dreams.
