It’s about nine months away but excitement has already begun
to mount for the NBA’s 2007 All-Star Weekend next February 16-18. February 18th
is ironically the same time as President’s Weekend and Chinese New Year. You
just know our valley’s 135,000 hotel rooms will be completely filled so whatever
is still available, book right now!
It’s the 56th game and will be telecast from our Thomas & Mack Center to a worldwide audience in more than 200 countries. Mandalay Bay will host the basketball theme park known as NBA All-Star Jam Session that weekend where fans can get up close to the leagues legends. Basketball hall of fame legends Dominique Wilkins and TNT broadcaster Kenny Smith (see photo album) were on hand at our Fashion Show Mall for the unveiling of the new NBA All-Star logo and to provide a sneak advance peek at the accompanying merchandise.
I got to talk with both superstars. Kenny said, “This All-Star weekend in Vegas is good for both the NBA and the city. One of the things that the All-Star game tries to do is to make it into an event and there is no greater place to do that than in Vegas. It’s not just a game. The game is just a small portion of what the whole week and weekend is about. The only thing I’m nervous about is that this could be the place that for the very first time, a player misses The All-Star game because he overslept. We know you never stop partying here.”
Mayor Oscar Goodman proudly wearing one of the new stunning Vegas-themed leather jackets pointed out that it’s the first time in NBA history a city without a team is hosting. Dominique commented, “This will give everybody the first real taste of what Vegas can give basketball so this is a city that could certainly support a team -- no question about it.”

Kenny added, “You shouldn’t isolate a city because of restrictions they have in terms of gambling. We’re here for the All-Star game so with everything else here, why not let there be a franchise Vegas team? This will be the litmus test to show Vegas can earn it.”
Comedian Rita Rudner joked: “We could call them the Las Vegas Strippers”.
The Mayor who has now decided to run for a 3rd mayoral term instead of going for governor or striving for senator and says the decision to not run for a state or national office is partly due to his six year battle with the league to get a team to the city.
“I am so pleased the NBA superstar players are coming here. They will go into our community and schools reaching out to all children with reading, counseling and teaching,“ he commented. “We’re also going to field a team made up of all the NBA players who were old-timers on the UNLV team before they went professional.”
My pal George Maloof who heads the Palms here, and together with his family own the Sacramento Kings, commented, “The event is the very top of the entire NBA season. It’s the right time to do it in Vegas and we’ll put on a show here that just cant be done anywhere else in the world and with the playoffs just underway everybody is thinking NBA now.”
I had to ask Dominique who he picked for the upcoming championship, “ I have to go with the obvious of Detroit in the East. They’re playing on all cylinders and nobody’s going to beat them in the east. In the West, I still have to go with the champions. They’re just a very strong team with a lot of guys who have been together a long time so teams like Sacramento with new pieces are going to find it very tough to beat the Spurs.”
Double Entendres
I picked the same night as stunning actress Mena Suvari of American Beauty fame to check out the preview performances of the high-octane, red-hot, exotic and erotic Headlights and Tailpipes show at the Stardust. She’s “best friends” with break-dancer Michael Carrasco who is definitely one of the ‘wows’ in the production and they were together again throughout the weekend so safe to figure that’s now a legitimate romance!

Headlights is the first Strip show to feature cool cars and revved up motorbikes – that actually run on a track through the audience. Even though the gorgeous dancers including Playboys’ Lauren Anderson and Barbara Moore and the knockout Kymberly Clifton will take your breath away with their delicious dancing and frenzied footsteps. You’ll also marvel at the B-Boy break-dancers and the BMX Warriors -- a team of extraordinary bicyclists who defy gravity with their spinning, climbing and dare-devil jumping antics. If you like hot cars and speed-bikes, you’ll be thoroughly satisfied at the way they’ve been worked into the show and if you aren‘t an auto-enthusiast, then the sexy girls will rev up your engines. Hotrod it over there if you have to!
Mena was also in town to promote Friday’s launch of her new independent feature ‘Standing Still” -- the first film from Vegas-based Insomnia Entertainment financed by casino moguls, Tim Poster & Tom Breitling (formerly Golden Nugget) and Station Casino honchos Lorenzo & Frank Fertitta III.
Oh, Oh... He's Halfway There
Its another of those “must keep it a secret” gems but I just can’t resist revealing, I hear negotiations are very close to completion for Jon Bon Jovi to have his own food and drink clubby hangout at Harrah’s on the Strip a la Toby Keith’s hit restaurant chain. The whole business of celebrity owners and superstar chefs has reached amazing proportions here in Vegas.
Piping Hot Salaries
The prestigious Washington Post has pointed out that a recent survey by StarChefs.com pointed out that on average our chefs are paid $85,000 per year and $14 an hour for line cooks -- making it the highest in the country. Even Thaddeus Dubois left the prestigious White House pastry kitchen to earn $120,000 at a new luxury hotel being built here. Former Washington DC chef Jacques Van Staden left his native South Africa in 1990 and had to sell his car to pay the airfare. But now he’s making $140,000 a year plus a profit sharing plan at his executive chef’s position at the award-winning Alize restaurant at the Palms.
More Savoy
Last week I gave you a first glimpse into the eagerly awaited and legendary Guy Savoy restaurant from Paris about to open May 17 at Caesars Palace and now thanks to the editors of Las Vegas Food & Beverage magazine, we’ve learned just how small and intimate it truly is. The chef’s six-person table is really in the center of the kitchen and then the remaining seats are in 3 private dining rooms: one for 8, another for 12 and the larger area that seats 32. Its wine wall has 950 bottles from the 1,200-selection list and a sommelier service bar just for champagne exclusively.
