'PHANTASTIC' OPENING
It was a glittering gala and platinum premiere for ‘Phantom: The Las Vegas Spectacular.’ Carol Burnett, Linda Lavin, Siegfried & Roy, and their longtime manager Bernie Yuman, Rita Rudner, Gordie Brown, Robert Goulet, Clint Holmes, designer David Rockwell, Venetian owner, Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, all added to the star-power of the night. Rival Cirque founder, Guy Laliberte, who has the world premiere of his new Beatles ‘LOVE’ musical directly opposite at the Mirage this Friday was actually the first to RSVP to the gilt-edged invitation!!

Pictured: Sierra Boggess, Brent Barrett and Rita Rudner
Composer Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, director Hal Prince, choreographer Gillian Lynne and lyricist Charles Hart were on stage for rousing curtain calls with the entire audience on its feet for standing ovations from the moment the curtain came down. Anthony Crivello (Phantom) and Elizabeth Loyacano (Christine) gave virtuoso performances and richly deserved their thunderous applause. Also attending were Brent Barrett (who shares the role of Phantom with Anthony) and Sierra Boggess (who shares the role of Christine with Elizabeth). Both had flipped a coin to determine who played opening night. Close ‘Phantom’ watchers know the double-casting is to prevent ‘’Vegas throat’’ with the 10 grueling weekly performances.

Pictured: Siegfried & Roy looking 'phab' at the 'Phantom' premiere.
Earlier in the evening at a private reception, old friends Andrew Lloyd Webber reunited with Siegfried & Roy, the first time they had seen each other in more than a decade. It was also a night of triumph for Roy who walked most of the red-carpet to prove his recovery from near-death injuries is still progressing. They loved the show, and Roy was one of the first to his feet to lead the standing ovation; "It's simply magnificent. Our congratulations to Andrew Lloyd Webber, Hal Prince and everyone involved with creating this amazing production," said Siegfried. "We loved it," said Roy. "Phantom is pure magic." Indeed some of the trickery and illusions in this ‘Phantom’ were orchestrated by magic maestro David Copperfield and his team. The breakthrough mirror and the disappearance and split second reappearance of the Phantom have to be seen to be believed!

Pictured: LEFT, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber RIGHT: Venetian owner, Sheldon Adelson and wife, Miriam
Andrew Lloyd Webber hit the double jackpot this week – in addition to the overwhelming praise ‘Phantom’ earned here, just two days earlier he won more raves for his revival of ‘Evita’ which opened in London’s West End – exactly 28 years to the day of the original ‘Evita’ opening. In the last 10 days, the hectic schedule had him juggling both elaborate productions while jetting back and forth not once, but twice! To steady his nerves and clear his head from the rigors of opening, ‘Phantom’ director, Hal Prince, took a break from the Venetian production the day before the premiere and strolled solo next door to Harrah’s to watch the Mac King afternoon magic comedy show! He departed Vegas in triumph yesterday morning -- and tonight, the winner of 21 Tony Awards including a Lifetime Achievement award is feted on the Great Lawn in NY’s Central Park with a concert devoted to the music of all his musicals.
After the show, guests at the after-party all agreed unanimously that ‘Phantom’ has a home in Vegas for years and years to come. They entered through a fog-filled entry similar to the Phantom’s underwater lair into a ballroom where they discovered a chandelier made from more than 4,000 red roses hung from the ceiling. Dancing was to Jack Mack and the Heart Attack and the favorite drink of the night: the Phantomtini.
For those of you curious about THAT onstage chandelier which has become a talked about highlight attraction of the 'Popera,’ it was made with 6,000 hand-strung crystals and 116 candle-lamps. Special effects of ‘Phantom’ have been turned also into an amazing 4-minute multi-media creation complete with lightning, fog and pyrotechnics on the exterior walls of the resort hotel too. It’s certain to bring Strip traffic to a standstill. Titled "Phantom Storm," flashing strobe lights and fog machines blanket the Campanile Tower bell to duplicate the sinister storm that rages inside the theater during the play. Your task every half-hour after 8.45PM nightly is to find the Phantom on the facade- and he’s a tricky one likely to show up in different places every show. I would be remiss if I didn’t thank both photographer Scott Doctor and PR honcho David Kirvin for covering the event for me because of a conflicting out-of-town engagement.
LIGHTS ON WITH ITS STAR-POWER
Across the Strip, there was yet another all-star turnout for Light nightclub’s 4th birthday at the Bellagio. And thanks again to photographer, Scott Doctor, for doing double duty for me. Leonardo DiCaprio and new girlfriend, 20-year-old Israeli swimsuit model, Bar Rafaeli, were making out and dancing closely to Christina Aguilera’s new song “Ain’t No Other Man” in the VIP booth. Leo’s group included Lukas Haas and friend January Jones.

Pictured: LEFT Jessica, Alba CENTER: Nicky Hilton, RIGHT Hank Azaria
All the celebs were chattering about the weekend wedding of Nicole Kidman and country star Keith Urban. Divorcee Shannon Elizabeth, when asked what advice or wishes she had to give them, her immediate response was, “Don’t do it.” There was a glamour-girl look to the Light anniversary poker tournament with Nicky Hilton, Sara Foster, Jessica Alba and Cash Warren. Jessica, determined to stay in the game for as long as possible, asked for advice and sneaked peeks of her hand to a poker expert seated next to her. Actress Michelle Rodriquez obeyed her probation termsby sticking to water all night long. That didn’t slow her down however, as she was dancing in every spot of the nightclub, and even singing along to AC/DC’s 'Highway to Hell.' Nicky Hilton and Kevin Connelly are still closerthanthis hanging with one another all night long. Nicky wore black leggings, a black baby doll top and black Christian Louboutin pumps, the identical outfit she wore a month ago, while dining next door at FIX! (Who else would remember this?) Incidentally, she’d just flown in from New York where she launched yet another design line, this time with Tweety -- that delightful twittering squeaking yellow cartoon bird owned by Warner Bros. ‘Eight Mile’ star Mekhi Phifer raved about girlfriend, Oni Souratha, even stating, “She may as well be my wife.”
Other celebs in the constellation included retired boxing champ Lennox Lewis with “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr., Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell (Current UFC Light heavyweight Champion), ‘Mindfreak’ magician Chris Angel and basketball stars Jermaine O’Neal (Indiana Pacers) and Tracy McGrady (Orlando Magic) who said of their favorite Vegas nightspot: “This place is insane. We’ve never seen more girls than when we come here.” For those keeping score, the poker tournament winner was David Chesnoff (former divorce attorney for Britney Spears) who won $75,000.

BREAKING NEWS: FIRST PEEK AT MGM’S MEGACITY
A major milestone is reached this morning as the foundation is poured for the $7 billion, 18 million square feet urban metropolis -- to be known as Project City Center -- on the Strip just south of the Bellagio down to the edge of Monte Carlo. Simultaneously, MGM President Bill McBeath of the Bellagio and Tony Dennis, VP of City Center, will unveil new residential elements and introduce two new architectural team members for the whopping project.

Luxe Life is proud to present the first national and internet photos that truly show the scope of the massive undertaking- a mega-city within an even larger metropolis! Its scheduled to open in 2009.

HARRY CONNICK’S ROYAL WEEKEND
I was up in the Nemacolin Woodlands luxury spa-resort near Pittsburgh for the weekend, MC’ing incredible musical concerts with Harry Connick, Jr. and Earth, Wind & Fire with Vegas entertainers, Danny and Karla D’Oscar (aerial scarves artists at the Rio) and hand-balancing duo Louri & Nikolai from the V Theater at the Aladdin.

Pictured: Yours truly with and Harry Connick, Jr. (LEFT) and Earth, Wind & Fire (RIGHT)
We’d all gathered for the 16th consecutive “Royal Weekend” I’ve hosted for 84 Lumber mogul, Joe Hardy, who has one of his 900 coast-to-coast yards here on Decatur Bvld. Harry Connick, Jr. showed me his hand-made homebuilt electronic music sheet screens that make paper notes obsolete. His magical musicians can find an arrangement on the Mac laptop computers within five seconds of him calling out his next random choice from the piano without ever fumbling through songbooks. Philip Bailey from EWF is hoping the group will be playing Vegas this New Years Eve in a remarkable unique first-ever concert plan if all the complicated parts can be linked together.
MISS AMERICA DOWN TO THE WIRE
The bid to get the Miss America back to Vegas is still alive, but touch and go right down to the wire. The Vegas Events office pulled its planned financial sponsorship because the Miss America TV reality show that will run for eight weeks prior to the pageant, will be shot instead in Los Angeles. But the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood Hotel has joined with the Tourist and Convention Bureau for an 11th hour bid. My neighbor, Aladdin President Mike Mecca, told me they made an attractive offer to pageant officials to prevent the actual telecast going elsewhere. “We’re providing the best facilities in America that they just won’t find anywhere else,” he said. Miss America execs say they’ve got the package and the door is not shut yet on Vegas. It’s really a case of last-minute nail-biting as we get down to the wire, but those in the know here are really hopeful it’s sweet enough to have the gorgeous girls say yes!
STRIP SCRIBBLES
The weekend announcement by hometown hero Andre Agassi’s decision to make Wimbledon and the US Open his final tennis championships before retiring came as no surprise to Luxe Life readers. Two weeks ago, we told you that he’d turned up in London by-passing the French tennis challenge and would make an extra effort for Wimbledon before calling it “his last.”… Mike Tyson was in the front-row at Saturday’s big open-air arena fight at Caesars Palace, proudly displaying his facial tattoo markings to all who wanted close-ups. … Sopranos star Michael Imperioli is no slouch in the nightlife department. He turned up to host a party at Pure in Caesars shortly before midnight and the Grey Goose and Red Bull kept him up until the lights were turned on at 4AM and the gaggle of girls were still around him. Floyd Mayweather and UFC slugger George St. Pierrre also attended. … Just what do basketball stars chow down on when they play ball here? At Stack in the Mirage, former Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks star Anthony Jerome Webb enjoyed the famous Kobe chili dogs. Greg Anthony, former Milwaukee Bucks’ NBA star, had the truffle penne pasta and San Antonio Spurs star Robert Horry scored with a Kurabota pork chop. Although they know each other as sports pals, all were there with their own groups of friends. NASCAR driver Elliot Sadler was another champion dining there. Incidentally when the NBA’s All-Star players come to town for All-Star weekend in February, they are already all booked into The Palms, but each player has to have the same size, same amenities, same furniture suites. Owner George Maloof says he’ll have existing beds replaced by 7-footers so everybody also sleeps the same! He’s named his new 2,500-seat concert theater The Arena and will kick-it off when the b-ballers are in town with an exhibition game.
