Master Magician Lance Burton Celebrates 10 Years of Vegas Magic -- LUXE LIFE GUEST COLUMNIST

Robin Leach asked me to write a little article on any subject that I care to talk about. It should have something to do with Las Vegas or magic or entertainment, I suppose. The truth is that I have been so busy the past few weeks, I have been putting this off ‘til now, just hours away from the deadline.

You see, on June 21st, I celebrated my 10-year anniversary at the Monte Carlo Hotel. It was an exciting time for me and my cast and crew, but it also was a hectic time. The hotel was nice enough to throw a big party and invite a bunch of press people and celebrities. They even had a red carpet set up with photographers and TV cameras. My Mom flew in from Kentucky to be here for the event. She will be 70 years old this year and this is the first time she has ever been on the red carpet. The rest of the family now calls her Paris Hilton. She had a great time and she got to meet lots of famous people at the party after the show. Robert Goulet and his wife were there along with Penn and Teller, Criss Angel, Alan Thicke, Clint Holmes, The Scintas and many other entertainers.

My main concern at the 10th anniversary show was to make sure I didn’t fall off the stage. When you are performing for a VIP crowd with lots of celebrities, that is the time things will go horribly wrong. Fortunately the show went well and I didn’t crash and burn like I do in my nightmares. I even drafted Robert Goulet into the act. I have lots of audience participation in my show and I decided at the last minute to take a huge gamble and pick a major Las Vegas icon as my volunteer. Bob Goulet had no idea I was going to call on him during the show, but he was simply spectacular! Heturned out to be perfect! He was funny andcharming and instinctively knew how much to do and what not to do. He is a real pro and after the show everyone was talking about that bit and asking me if he really was as surprised as he seemed. I am now in his debt, so I may have to sing a duet with him at his show one day.

Speaking of red carpets, I ran over to The Mirage last night after my show to attend the opening of the new Cirque/Beatles show. Wow! What a great show! If you grew up loving the Beatles, like me, don’t miss this show.
Like all Cirque shows it is hard to describe, but I loved it from beginning to the very end. I got to see lots of interesting people there too. David Brenner and Tai Babalonia sat next to me. Frank Marino was in the row behind me and Carrot Top was a couple of rows in front of me. I ran into my pals Siegfried and Roy before the show and they both looked great! I am sure there were many other entertainers there, but those are the ones that I saw and talked to, they were all nice folks.

Here is my favorite moment of the evening. I got to The Mirage and found one of the PR people to see what they wanted me to do. You see, I always feel if you get invited to an event and get free tickets, you should try to be a nice guy and make yourself available to help them promote the show in any way you can. Usually they ask you to walk the red carpet. This is a simple matter of walking down the row of press people and talking to reporters and getting your picture taken. It is easy and simple, doesn’t take too long and it makes the event look good. This night was no different. Except as we were heading up to the start of the red carpet, I hear the crowd start to yell “Ringo! Ringo! Ringo!”  Now I’m thinking to myself, “Oh wow, Ringo Starr is walking the red carpet!” No one will want to talk to me. What If I run in to him? What would I say? Fortunately for me by the time I got going down the line of reporters Ringo had gone and the press folks had to settle for asking a magician how he feels about combining Cirque du Soleil with ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.’

Sounds like a perfect match made in Vegas to me and I almost got to see a Beatle live and in person.

Lance Burton can be seen at the Monte Carlo, where he just celebrated 10 years.
