Frank Marino: Fashion Is Always in Passion -- LUXE LIFE GUEST COLUMNIST

Oh, I’m so excited because this is my chance to fill in for my pal Robin Leach. I must admit that I was a little nervous about the whole thing because I didn’t want to make any mistakes.

Thank God! All of my celebrity friends offered to pitch in and help me out. Charo was kind enough to correct all of my English, which was about as helpful as using Stevie Wonder as a crossing guard.  Star Jones said since she has so much free time lately that she wouldn’t mind proofreading the article. Even Robin himself was kind enough to say, “If you’re ever feeling under the weather, I’d be more than happy to put on one of your Bob Mackie gowns and fill in for you at "La Cage" at the Riviera.

OK, let’s talk about my biggest passion in life: Fashion! My motto has always been: “It’s not who you are; it’s what you wear.” For years now, I’ve been watching the Chief of the Fashion Police, Joan Rivers, the wisecracking wit of the red carpet, critique the celebrities’ ensembles at every major awards show there is and I always thought I could do that too.

After all, I didn’t become the longest running headliner in Las Vegas, as well as the winner of “Most Stylish Las Vegan” several times over in the ‘Review-Journal’s’ Best of Las Vegas Poll, by not being able to change with the times and dress accordingly.

In fact, just recently, Mayor Oscar Goodman honored me with a key to the city. I had Donatella Versace create a royal blue evening gown to accentuate my red, white and blue fauxfur creation and Judith Lieber supplied a $6,000 red star handbag to finish off the ensemble. I felt so patriotic that I thought about enlisting in the military.  Of course, we wouldn’t win any wars, but the parades would be fabulous.

I must say that times have changed so drastically over the years. When I began my reign as “The Queen of Las Vegas” about 20 years ago, I can remember people coming into the “La Cage” showroom in beaded cocktail dresses with mink stoles and wearing expensive jewelry; outfits who would have given Liberace a run for his money.

Don’t get me wrong: Some of the women got dressed up, too. Nowadays, things have become so casual that most people’s ideas of high-fashion are a fanny pack with flip flops. If things get any more laid-back, I’m afraid people will begin arriving naked. If this ever happens, we will have to let “Thunder Boys” and the beautiful “Crazy Girls” in for free so that they can see the way we all should look.

Speaking of great bodies, don’t even get me started on the subject of tight clothing. My designers have always taught me that Spandex is a privilege not a right!

Just the other day, I saw this larger size woman who had these really big thighs. But don’t worry her stomach covered them. You know, the type of woman with a backside so big, that if she ran for the phone, she’d get carpet burns on her rear-end.  She had the nerve to be wearing a shiny Spandex disco dress with large cut-outs. It was so ugly that Wynonna Ryder wouldn’t steal it. But what was even worse was that she was old enough to be Britney Spears great-grandmother.

Britney Spears is another on who should probably rethink her wardrobe. I understand that showing a lot of flesh is very trendy, but when she played here last year, I went backstage and watched her take off her bra. I’m telling you that explosion was so big; it almost blew Rosie O’Donnell back into the closet.

Speaking of closets, I do thank God that most of The Strip’s divas of today still keep the glamour of the neon forest alive by keeping their wardrobesfull of beautiful and exotic costumes. In my opinion, some of the best-dressed ladies are Chrissi Scinta and Rita Rudner and of course the femme fatales who impersonate everyone from Cher to Diana Ross right here in the fabulous “La Cage.”

Until next time, remember whoever says that money can’t buy happiness, just doesn’t know where to shop.
