In This Issue:Robin
talks to Liza Minnelli about her first Vegas show in
8 years and her future
plans.
The
PRIDE fighters are training at Caesars, and you can watch.
The
Bellagio hosts a living painting made from 160,000 flowers and
plants.
Willa's
gone, so now we're rooting for Jerry Springer on
'Dancing with the Stars.'
With
no playoffs to worry about, Alex Rodriguez parties
at PURE.
Wow! Liza
Minnelli's first Vegas show in 8 years was simply stunning
and
spectacular. (See Scott Doctor's photo to the left.) The legendary icon proved that at 60-years-of-age, she's
still got
a superb voice with power and confidence and that, recent, scandalous,
headlines in her up and down career have made her stronger and happier
than
ever. Appearing at the Luxor,
where she'll return for Thanksgiving dates Nov 23-25, Liza got standing
ovations from the first song, and every one through to the end. In our
business
they call that a "tour de force," and she won it with 100% maximum
applause. Liza and I first met more than 25 years ago, on the opening
night of
the infamous Studio 54 nightclub in Manhattan,
when I was on my first night of celebrity interview duty for the then
fledgling
CNN. (Brooke Shields was my date!) Liza even
dedicated "Alexander's
Ragtime Band" to me during the show, so I was very touched. When we
chatted before curtain up, she told me that she wanted to re-create an
old
Vegas tradition that she and Sammy Davis Jr.
started here
way back when. She explained that they used to give 2AM concerts for
all the
other entertainers in town who could never see their show because they
were
working at competing times. So, no surprise at dinner, with all the
MGM
corporate executives, she explained her wish and got full approval from
MGM's
entertainment honcho Richard Sturm and Luxor's
President Felix
Rappaport, who told me "It's great news. We will do her gypsy
show when she comes back here in November." However, rather than a 2AM
freebie
at the Luxor
for Strip entertainers, it may be a 1PM freebie on Saturday November
25. Liza
explained to me: "I loved when Sammy and I did a special show at 2 in
the morning
after we had both done two shows. We did a special show for all of the
entertainers. I remember those. Sammy and I were always here at the
same time
for some reason. That was at the Riviera
and it was sensational and maybe I can do it during the Thanksgiving
run. I
want to invite the whole Strip. The point of that is to entertain the
entertainers, and that is fun. It is called a gypsy show. Entertainers
in New York, chorus kids
are called gypsies, because they go from show to show. I got the gypsy
robe,
which was a huge honor, my first Broadway show. It was amazing. I loved
that
moment. I'm thrilled we will do it again when I return."
Now here's the rest of our candid chat with Liza at the Luxor:
RL: Lets talk first about quick impressions of Vegas since you arrived.
LM: When I first came here, I was just 7 and my mom was playing at the Frontier hotel. It was great. Through the 70's and a little into the 80's everybody stayed up all night and went to the lounge shows, it was an all-night town. During the day people collapsed at the pool, but at 5 o'clock everybody just disappeared. Women put on their best gowns and jewelry and the men put on great looking dark suits and they went out. It was kind of mysterious. It was naughty, but there was a sense of excitement. And now what they've done, the town is exactly the same, but it is like Disneyland. It is a town for the whole family. I entertain the whole family so I am thrilled.
RL: You are still a kid at heart. Do you want to go on the rides while you are here; the Venetian gondola, the NY, NY rollercoaster?
LM: I think it is wonderful. I want to go on all of them. I am going to two Cirque shows tonight; KA first and then Zumanity. I am thrilled. This is so much fun. When I come back for our Thanksgiving shows I am going to see LOVE.
RL: I remember being with you 8 years ago in New York and it has been 8 years since you have been back in Vegas, so a lot of things have happened in that time. You are looking fine, you are healthy, you have lost a little weight and you are dancing your tush off again.
LM: I am happy. I am working and I have wonderful friends and I have a lot of dancer friends here that I can't wait to see. This place spawned one of the greatest choreographers in the world. His name is Ron Lewis. He redefined dancing. I love doing this show. I always take the guys from the orchestra with me everywhere. They've been with me forever and the sound like 47 pieces there are only 12 of them. U2's Bono once told me there is a lot of entertainment today with the effects and the tricks. He said 'with you it is just the light, the woman, and the music.' One woman standing at a microphone and that is extraordinary, and he summed up perfectly what I do.

RL: Are you busier today at 61 than you have ever been? You are teaching at the Actor's Studio, you have 2 TV shows, 'Arrested Development' and now a new 'CSI.' You have this Vegas show, and you are teaching brain damaged children to recover through dance?
LM: Well I am not teaching them, I am helping them through movement and music. Art is a part of helping brain injured children. Cross patterning is when your arms go opposite your legs and that helps rebuild different parts of the brain. So, you get kids and you find some good music and you find some dance steps that help the brain, because I have been working with brain-injured kids since I was 20, with great results.
RL: You are coming back here to the Luxor in November; you are booked again so quickly even though the curtain hasn't even gone up yet .
LM: I didn't even know about the 2nd set of dates. It is so funny. Rosie O'Donnell said to me, 'I am going to come and spend Thanksgiving with you.' I said where and she said Las Vegas and I said but I am going there tomorrow and she said no, no, you are there in November and I said but I thought I was there this weekend and nobody had told me that they booked another show. It was great.

Liza during preperations for her amazing Luxor performances this past weekend.
RL: You mentioned Vegas show choreographer Ron Lewis, what do you remember best back then?
LM: Viva Las Vegas and Keep the Girls and his shows at the Dunes . I had never seen movement like that. It flowed so brilliantly. I said that's what I want to do. I think the greatest talent God gave me is knowing who is more talented than I am, and learning from them. I am able to see them and say that is what I want to do, and never settling for where you I'm at, finding things that you I want to do.
RL: What have you put into this Luxor show. Did you work in new add-ons?
LM: Oh sure. What I have tried to do is build it properly. It is the way a show is built. I was lucky enough to work my whole life with Fred Ebb, and he knew how to build a show. He died last year and he looked at me and he said, 'you know what to do' and I said yes, Freddy I do. Well, the show is just me and the band but I kill myself during it. It is a good show, it has gotten great reviews the last two places I have tried it out. What I did is go back over all the things that people had told me they liked and I put those songs in and then I put the songs that I really like a lot in so there are some musical surprises.
RL: Being the definitive Vegas female artist and not seeing you here for so long it looks as if you have been very quiet for the last 8 years.
LM: Ha. No, I have been all over the world. I have been doing television. I just finished a CSI, which was great. I played the Paris Opera house. I am the first entertainer of my genre to play the Paris Opera by herself.

RL: Will you consider coming back to Vegas on a limited basis?
LM: This show is so different. I mean this show is a killer. It is just me and the audience. There is no relief. The way I sing I don't think I can do every night. I can do it three nights in a row, but then I need a day off. I think everybody suffers from Vegas throat. But I take care of my voice. I lose 7 pounds a show. It is all liquids. I can't eat all day when I work because I get sick. The muscles you use to sing, the diaphragm muscles, get really needy, but if I eat I get acid reflux. That is why I am so excited about going out to dinner after the show. I am just excited about being here. This town has changed so much when you think back, but it is still the greatest city in the world.
I just had to ask Liza about all the scandalous headlines that resulted from her recent, tempestuous marriage to manager David Guest. She didn't answer, so I asked again: "Is this a chapter of your life that you are never going to comment about? Your lips went silent." And then she smiled slightly and said: "The word dismissed has never sounded so good. That is all I am going to say, but I feel great and I have been healthy for a long time. I go to a great jazz dance class 2 hours a day. My teacher is Luigi, who is 81-years-old and he danced in all of my parent's movies. He is like an uncle to me and he keeps me well."

I'm teary-eyed! She danced her heart out for six weeks but the judges and viewers decided there were two mis-steps too many. So, they said "goodbye" to our favorite Vegas Pussycat Doll guest-star, Willa Ford on ABC-TV's 'Dancing with the Stars.' Now I'm rooting for another old friend, Jerry Springer, to go all the way tonight. He's another pussycat, but no doll!!
SHOW OF PRIDE
Today through Thursday, fans of the world-renowned PRIDE fighters get the opportunity to watch their favorite athletes train at Caesars Palace for Saturday's showdown. Julius Caesar, Cleopatra and their Royal Court will give a "royal welcome" to Mark Coleman (3-time UFC champion and Olympic wrestler) and current PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko at 2PM this afternoon. The PRIDE battle is a legendary event in Japan, matching the world's fiercest fighters in contests of strength and honor featuring a mix of such combative sports as wrestling, boxing and jiu-jitsu. It is PRIDE's first US battle and Caesars is a sponsor of "The Real Deal," being presented at Thomas & Mack October 21. Here's the daily 4PM-6PM training schedule at the resorts outdoor Roman Plaza amphitheater: Today -- Josh Barnett and Pawel Nastuia, Tomorrow (WED) -- Kevin Randleman and Mauricio "Showgun" Rua and Thursday -- Fedor Emelianenko and Mark Coleman.
IMPORTANT DATE
Please mark next February 10 down on your diary now, because it's just been confirmed that three of the world's top chefs will team for our annual Keep Memory Alive fundraising gala. Wolfgang Puck will play host to supreme culinary king Joel Robuchon (click here for our Luxe Life exclusive interview and L'Atelier tour) and Food Network star Mario Batali, who opens his double-decker restaurant in The Venetian early January. I'll be serving as the mc-auctioneer once again, and the challenge will be on to see if we can once again shatter the record of $20-million we raised this past February -- the largest amount of charitable money raised in a single night in American history! AOL is a sponsor of tech-equipment for the Frank Gehry designed Lou Ruvo Brain Institute research center being built downtown, so as the fabulous night draws closer we'll keep you updated with celebrity and entertainment details.
SKYHIGH PRICES
While we're on the subject of great chefs with regal restaurants, I just have to point out the Food & Beverage's Eye on Vegas item, reporting the world's most expensive baked potato. First, my eyebrows rose when I saw the $150 lobster at the new Nove restaurant in the Palms, and even higher when I noticed the $195 filet mignon at the new Stripsteak restaurant in Mandalay Bay (check here tomorrow for our full interview with Stripsteak star chef Michael Mina.) Now the brows are at full attention for the the $70 baked potato served at Fiamma in MGM. The potato is twice-baked and filled with white truffles from Alba, Italy. When done to perfection, additional white truffles are shaved on top and then finished with bacon, sour cream and parmesan cheese with the appearance of a "cumulous cloud."
ABBA'S MONTH
Rocktober is the new name of the 10th month of the year because it certainly belongs to ABBA. Did you know, for example, that yesterday was the date in 1973 that the ABBA name was used for the very first time? The name comes from using the first-name initials of its 4 members: Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Anni-Frid (Frida). Today, the new coffee table book on the inside story of the hit 'Mamma Mia!' show and the songs of Abba is released along with the 5th anniversary special edition CD/DVD of the Broadway show, which will celebrate the actual anniversary tomorrow. Last Tuesday it was the Vegas production's 1,450th performance at Mandalay Bay!
GORGEOUS GARDENS

The beautiful scene at the Bellagio's conservatory and botanical gardens.
The seasons have changed, and fall is here. Do you know we're just two weeks ago from the end of Daylight Savings Time, when the clocks go back an hour on Halloween weekend? The Bellagio's conservatory and botanical gardens have a new enchanting harvest tableau with colorful gourds, pumpkins and squash and a complete working cider mill. It's a must-see for locals and out-of-towners who will find a winding stream, enshrouded in mystical fog poweringthe mill's 35-ft-tall giant wheel. All told it's a living painting made from 160,000 flowers and plants, complete with a 13 ft. tall scarecrow guarding the portrait of the migrating mallards who look so lifelike you'll think they'll fly off the canvas any moment and make home in the spectacular gardens. The amazing exhibit will remain on show through November 25 and becomes of our city's best attractions.
STRIP SCRIBBLES
In the spirit of the new Playboy Club and the Baseball Championship Series, former major league pitcher Scott Erickson and his Playmate-sportscaster wife, Lisa Guerrero, have reserved a condo at the new W Las Vegas Hotel, Casino & Residences. Their 52nd floor studio had a $1-million price tag!! ... Meantime, New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez partied at PURE with 10 of the dazzling ladies of FHM. It was a night of Grey Goose vodka and all night dancing with Rodriguez, at one point, being the center of attention within his 10 lady circle.
TONIGHT'S TIP

The dancers of 'La Femme,' which is celebrating its 5th year of sexiness.
The super-sexy sensual dancers of 'La Femme' will make a special appearance at PURE while celebrating the 5th anniversary of the topless cabaret and French cultural phenomenon that has been turning heads at MGM Grand.
