It's supposed to remain "top secret" for at least another 6-months, but Luxe Life can confirm this morning that Cirque du Soleil officials have targeted a February, 2008 opening date for their still untitled magic spectacular featuring 'Mindfreak' magician Criss Angel at the Luxor resort. And, production chieftains are whispering that it could windup heading towards $200 million in final costs!

Criss Angel is welcomed to the Luxor by its President Felix Rappaport and a couple of the Fantasy Girls.
Luxe Life first revealed Cirque's ambitious plans for a magic show much earlier this year, as preparations were under way for the premiere of the Beatles 'LOVE' musical at the Mirage. Show concept creator Giles Ste Croix predicted that, because of Cirque's partnership with MGM properties, a Cirque show built around the Elvis Presley story would eventually debut at MGM's new mega City Center complex and that Cirque's first foray into magic would be unveiled at its Luxor property.

Yesterday, neither Luxor President Felix Rappaport nor Angel, who moved into the resorts Presidential suite for 28-episodes of his top-rated A&E show 'Mindfreak,' would comment about the planned opening in 16-months time. But Luxe Life did learn that preliminary rehearsals for the Cirque magic spectacular are already underway with Criss in the starring role. He will juggle the two schedules until the 'Mindfreak' filming is wrapped. The May 31 debut of 'Mindfreak' will probably be a live broadcast with Criss attempting an amazing illusion of levitating in the brilliant beam of light from the Luxor pyramid's roof. "That will be the highest I've ever levitated," Criss told me. "I'm also going to do an illusion where I make the entire pyramid of the Luxor totally disappear."
That fits in perfectly with Giles Ste.Croix's statement to me earlier this year that Cirque wanted the world's best magic show with illusions never ever before dreamed possible. "The Cirque show will do absolutely everything to beat what it would look like if you had David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, Lance Burton and all the world's best magicians rolled into one," one Cirque executive told me. Still to come on the Cirque drawing boards for Vegas is a Cirque ice-skating themed production!
Check back here on Thursday when we have another amazing Cirque exclusive as it prepares for its first foray into Macau, the new Asian gaming colony near Hong Kong. Then, next week we'll have our full Luxe Life interview with Criss about all the magic he's planning during his residency at the Luxor; an extraordinary achievement for the magic man who once upon a time could only drive up and down the Strip in a cheap one-day car rental looking at other magician's billboards and vowing one day he'd be there too!. "In my new home at the Luxor, I can actually look down at the cheap hotel I had to stay in once for $30 a night when I came here to try and become a magician," he told me.
