REVIEW:  CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR  3 STARS

photo gallery image

We've all become used to solid performances from all three stars of this film and that's what keeps this one going.  Tom Hanks is Congressman Charlie Wilson, who after witnessing first hand the atrocities in 1980 Afghanistan, raises money to arm them against Russia.  Philip Seymour Hoffman is the C.I.A. spy that becomes Wilson's contact over seas and Julia Roberts is the Texas billionairess that help raise the funds.

The story is based on true events and the film is entertaining enough to keep you interested, but only because of the fine performances and it's less than 2 hours.  Most of the script is dialogue and there is little action to speak accept for a few clips of Russian helicopter missions and the Afghans using their new weapons.  The setting is very "80's excess" and Charlie is the picture of it which generates steady laughs throughout.

Give Charlie a chance if you enjoy watching these actors at the top of their game and you may learn a little history too.
