Mr.Brooks  3  1/2 stars

Welcome back Kevin Costner!  It's been a long time since Costner made a really good mainstream film and Mr.Brooks finds him at the top of his game.  Mr.Brooks is handsome, wealthy, married to the beautiful Marg Helgenberg (C.S.I.) and Man of the Year, but he has a dark secret.  For years, Mr.Brooks has been the serial killer known in the news as 'The Thumbprint Killer'.  Brooks wants to stop killing, but just when he's about to, a young photographer (Dane Cook) blackmails him into taking him to his next murder.  Hot on Brook's heels is a rogue detective played convincingly by Demi Moore as she gathers clues while being hunted down by another psycho known as The Hangman.

The coolest thing about this film is the character of Mr.Brooks.  He's played by Kevin Costner AND William Hurt!  Yes, that's right.  Costner is the man and Hurt is his conscience!  Costner and Hurt are fantastic on screen together and both performances are Oscar-worthy.  You're literally on the edge of your seat every time these two actors appear together and they quite often induce laughs.

The film itself is shot quite well and the production values are the best money can buy.  The story has plenty of twists and turns, plus excellent sub-plots that keep the pace going nicely.  As far as violence, it's there, but not overwhelming. Don't get me wrong though, when it is violent it's very much so!  Think of it as a big budget, mainstream 'American Psycho'.
