Forgot

I didn't post my walking stats on the last post so here they are lest you think I'm not keeping to the plan. 7-13 no walk. 7-14 it was hot, hot, hot, and I managed to get in 2.569 miles. 7-15 did 3.041 miles. 7-16 Frank had surgery but I did get in some walk time waiting for him to be discharged.  7-17 I did 2.359 miles. This was the day I fell and bruised my knees and ego. 7-18 was a fabulous rare morning with a cool breeze to off set this oppressive heat wave we've been having and I got in 4.178 miles. 7-19 no walk. 7-20 it was icky, hot and sticky and I only did 2.641 miles. Bad news on the obesity front. As a country we're not making much progress in getting and keeping the pounds off. http://news.aol.com/article/south-remains-nations-fattest-region/88630 Here in Austin you see hundreds of people on the hike and bike trails and streets every day getting their workouts in. As a city I think they do a lot to help people lead a healthy life style but they can't make each and every person lead that life style so as always it's up to the individual to make the choices that affect their health and well  being. For all my whining I do encourage anyone who wants to lead a healthier life to get up off the couch and do a little exercise. You'll feel better about yourself for it. Also one neat fact I found is thisl; for every ONE pound you lose you take FOUR pounds of pressure off of your knees! Is that cool or what?

Busy week, TURBT, Clumsiness

Here we are almost another week since I last posted and yet the world goes on. ;-) We've had a busy week. My husband had to undergo a TURBT which is bladder cancer surgery usually performed on those with superficial tumors. He sees the doctor again on Monday and we'll see what further treatment is needed. He's doing fine, just grumpy because he is trying to give up smoking and he has to rest and neither one of these things does he want to do. Keep him in your thoughts please. We've kept this news pretty close to the vest so as not to worry people until we actually know something but we feel since the doctor let him come home the same day as surgery and waited to see him until Monday that his prognosis is pretty good. Keeping fingers crossed.

A few weeks ago Frank bought some web cams and we've been having fun talking and watching our kids (they are kids to us) online. Try it, it's a lot of fun. You do have to disconnect your camera when you are not using it lest someone hack in and turn it on.

I fell on one of my morning walks thus the subject line mentions clumsiness. I bruised both knees and one hand and was sore all over for a couple of days. Pay attention to the area in front of you so this won't happen to you.

Photo 1-3: First day, 2nd day, 3rd day - note the scrape looks like a rose, or it does to me. Plus the bruise took on the shape of the Band-Aid. Photo 4 Another 'Elvis' sighting

Sunday Postings

Walking stats first...July 7 2.962 miles. July 8 no walk, rest day plus Frank had an early morning doctor appointment.  July 9 had short walk of 2.011. It was brutal hot early on. Town Lake looked like it was made of jello... it was so still until a small breath of a breeze blew in rippling the surface, making it shimmer in the bright sunlight.  Mom had doctor appointment before lunch. 7-1l0 did 3.456. July 11 did 2.627. July 12 did 3.865. It was nice and not as hot that morning so it made for a good walk. The river walk was crowded with hundreds of people and their dogs.

Walking Stats: June 28-29 no walking. June 30 - 2.985 miles. July 1 - 3.549 miles. July 2 - 2.462 miles. July 3 - no walking, Frank had Doc. appointment early in the AM. July 4 - 2.010 miles, felt sick at stomach and tired so walk was no fun. July 5 - 3.947 miles, not as hot in the morning as it has been and I felt better. July 6 - no walk.

We've been watching the Olympic trials. I think the Americans should go to a point system for the Olympic teams. Sort of like the World Skiing Cup thing. The better you do all year or for four years or whatever, you make the team based on your cumulative performances. Anybody can have a bad day or moment or get hurt and with the system we have in place we sometimes don't get to send our best athletes to the games. Tyson Gay for instance. He won the 100 meter dash in 9.77 seconds. Wind assisted sure but wind shmind that's fast! Then he had a leg cramp during the 200 meter run and couldn't finish it. So, he's not going to be in it. Sort of sucks that the best of the best work for four years and it all comes down to a few seconds to make the team. On the swimming side Phelps won his five races as did Hoff for the women. Now there seems to be whispers of doping for Dara Torres (41) who made her fifth Olympics. Sigh...seems people don't like to see others do what they cannot and I'm talking about you sports writers. She looks in shape to me and I say 'you go girl' and hope she medals in the games.

This that and the other

6-23  2.462 (jogged 1458.24 ft) 6-24 walked 2.891 miles (jogged 1421.47 ft) 6-25 walked 2.626 miles 6-26 walked 3.012 miles 6-27 walked 2.466 miles (jogged 2153.64 ft)

Check out my brothers blog posting for June 26 to see what some people are calling fat: just FYI you do not necessarily have cellulite just because you're fat. I've known people who were considered obese but didn't have cellulite. The model in question is not fat! I'd really like to see the people who calling her fat wear the same outfit she is and have themselves judged by others.

On the high fuel costs. I don't think it's set in with some people that everything is higher because of the high cost of oil. Personally I haven't noticed people behaving more responsibly on the roadways. They speed just as much and there are just as many cars with single occupants as there were before gas hit 4 bucks a gallon.  In Austin less than 2 percent report changing their driving habits compared to the more than 4 percent in the western states. I have noticed more people waiting at the bus stops during my morning walks than there has been this time of year. Could be the awful heat and the high gas prices that accounts for this.

Photo 1: Run-Tex supplies fresh cold water and cups to thirsty joggers, runners, walkers, etc. everyday. A big THANK YOU to them for this great free service. Photo 2: One of the 'paddle boats' that take tourists down the Colorado on sight seeing trips in the summer months.

Growing problem and Derick's Small Business

Our grandson Derick has a small business he calls http://www.distinctsalvage.com He and his Papa have worked hard on his products. Today he made his first sale. Woohoo!

I found the article below on AOL and thought it was interesting. Some people say that there is no obesity epidemic but the data shows otherwise. How worried are you about this problem for yourself and your children? Australia Vies With U.S. on Obesity Scale

By Rob Taylor,

CANBERRA (June 20) - Australia is on track to become the fattest nation, although experts questioned on Friday whether it had overtaken the United States and small Pacific countries for the unenviable title.Around 4 million Australian adults, or 26 percent of the population, were obese, eclipsing the 25 percent rate in the United States, a study by the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute released in Melbourne said. "If we ran a fat Olympics we'd be gold medal winners as the fattest people on earth at the moment," Institute preventative cardiology head Professor Simon Stewart told the Age newspaper.
The report, Australia's Future Fat Bomb, to be presented to a government inquiry into the nation's obesity problem on Friday, said 70 percent of men and 60 percent of women aged 45 to 65 were technically overweight or obese.
In total, 9 million people were too heavy -- almost half the 21 million population -- and 123,000 were at risk of early death over the next 20 years, the study said.
While the report said Australia had overtaken the United States as the fattest nation on the planet, recent U.S. studies show around 34 percent of Americans are overweight or obese. And small Pacific nations top World Health Organization lists, with 94.5 percent of people in tiny Nauru classed as overweight, leading to chronic diabetes problems on the island.
Also this was disturbing:
Here is the startling bottom line: Heavy people's brains may age faster.
If you're overweight or obese in middle age, it can have a devastating effect on your health by causing you to age far faster than normal. According to a study from the San Francisco VA Medical Center, being overweight in your 40s and 50s causes a lower level of certain brain chemicals that signal good brain health and function. Without these chemicals, the brain's aging process speeds up, putting you at a significantly higher risk of Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Got some rain today

Yeah some rain came today. Not a lot but every bit is welcome. If the weather channel icon on our desktop is to be trusted it shows the temperature at 77. The AC just kicked in a short while ago so I'm not sure that's the correct reading.

Here are some photos of Frank and the Father's Day present he got from Pam & Rick. I didn't take photos of the gifts he got from Frankie and Sandy or Cyndi because they were here to see him enjoy them firsthand. Frank is showing the box because it has a crossword motif and he loves working crosswords and he's very good at them.

I watched Gone Baby Gone last night and while it was an okay film the cursing was way too much. You have to wonder sometimes that people are going to lose the power of speech when all they say are four letter words all the time. I think screen writers throw tons of curse words into the scripts because they don't have a very large vocabulary.

Lazy, lazy

Here I am again...being lazy about posting. I gave up watching TV news for a while because the only thing on most of them was information regarding the death of Tim Russert. Now while he seemed to be a competent newsman and a nice guy he was not a head of state or anything close to that to warrant round the clock news about his passing. Still the news channels did pretty much the same thing when Anna Nicole died only that was a circus and the coverage for Mr. Russert was much more respectful. As a result of this I haven't kept up with any of the political news. I did catch a blurg stating that Hillary and Obama would appear together sometimes next week. Guess it's fund raising time! I've received two mailings from his campaign and several emails.

Walking stats: 6-12 did 2.144, jogged 1,419.48 feet. Not trying to run, just rev my metabolism up a bit. 6-13 3.409. No walking on the 14th and 15th. On the 16th did 2.538 and jogged 1,053.35 feet. The 17th Iwalked 3.002 and jogged 2.400.30 feet of that distance. The 18th I walked 3.099. The 19th I did 3.136 and jogged l,321.46 feet. Today, the 20th, I walked 3.741 miles. It's was brutally hot the past few weeks, in the 100's almost every day and humid to boot. This weather does not make for good walking weather. It saps the strength right out of you. It also makes you cranky (or it does me) and almost want to cry because you are so tired.Today is much better. Was 72 degrees when I left the house this morning and the sun stayed behind the clouds until my walk was over. Now at a little after 4pm it's only 85. Woohoo! Still no rain for us though. :-(  Oh just FYI and a reminder to myself. I'm not eating anything after 8Pm except for water or milk which I need to take my evening pills. I have to eat something with the ones I take at night or take them with milk. Milk seems the better choice here. I read today that a man lost 86 pounds eating at McDonalds! No, no big Macs or fries. Just the salads and wraps and apple dippers without caramel sauce. See, fast food doesn't have to be fattening.

Cyndi's Trip to California

Just a short entry on walking stats today. Did 3.419 miles on the 10th of June and 2.648 today. Still hot, still humid but at least we have a nice breeze to make it bearable.

Cyndi took a short trip to California with her friend Christina and some photos from that journey are posted with this entry.

Mussings

Did 2.972 miles this morning and if it hadn't been for the nice breeze I might not have done that much. Too much heat and humidity so early in the season, it's not even summer yet!

Krys and I went to see Eddie Izzard last night and we laughed and laughed. He's not for everyone but we find him very funny. Oh...and he said if he could he would vote for Obama and that he thought Hillary would be good on the ticket so the office would be in the hands of the Dems for 8 to 16 years.  I took a very short video of his performance and post it later. You can rent his DVD's or find them on Amazon. I love Dressed to Kill.

Since it's been hot and Frank has been watching college baseball play-games and basketball play-off games I've been watching movies. I saw La Vien Rose about Edith Piaf, The History Boys, and Amazing Grace. I liked all three. I've posted a video from the last film and no matter if you're religious or not hearing Amazing Grace played by bag pipes is a very moving experience.
