10 Miles Down
I've been doing my weekly long runs with my buddy Steph. She's training for the NYC Marathon, which is two weeks before mine. And though we're using two different schedules, we've managed to make it work. Today was a dreaded 10 miler. I was supposed to run 8, but since last week's 13-mile-run was actually only 6, I thought 10 seemed a good middle ground. I'm extremely proud of us for doing it. It was pouring when we headed out and a little on the chilly side. When we touched base at 7am to make sure we were still on, I was kind of hoping she would back out. But we both wanted to get it over with so we powered on.
We ran along the Hudson River -- a new route for us. I think the new surroundings delivered a bit of a boost to our waning motivation. We'll have to start switching it up more often. It was also nice not to have to compete for lane space with cyclists, skaters, other runners, walkers, dogs, and participants in whatever race or event is happening every weekend in Central Park.
I felt pretty good until about mile 6 or 7. That's when my legs really started to fatigue. For the next 2 miles, I felt like my legs weighed 50 pounds and my knees and feet were really starting to hurt. I wasn't sure I was going to make it the rest of the way. Steph was in similar pain. We stopped talking and just focused, running in silence the rest of the way, occasionally breaking it to say, "Okay, we're almost there." By mile 9, I was feeling a bit better and some of the pain was starting to subside. As we finished, I was definitely hurting, but I was beaming with pride -- or runner's high -- one of the two.
