Finally a Good 12-miler

The first 12 miler just hurt, the second was really rough for all kinds of reasons (not enough sleep, humidity, blah blah), but finally after a week of less-than-stellar (slow) 5-mile runs on  my own, I think Steph and I pulled off a pretty good 12-miler. Apparently the third time was the charm. I still got pains in all the usual places by mile 10 (knees, hip, toes) but  managed to make it through.

The first 6 miles were pretty uneventful, but at as we started mile 7, it started to rain. We debated heading inside, but then decided to keep going. After all, if it rains on race day, we’d have no choice but to stick it out so we may as well see what it’s like to run a long time in the rain. It actually started raining pretty heavily and there’s really nothing different to it in terms of technique. But it was pretty uncomfortable to be so soaked on a breezy, chilly day.

Now, here’s my big plug for moisture-wicking clothes. While there’s nothing those Dri-fit products can do about a downpour, they were pretty light even when wet, and when the rain was over, my clothes were on their way to dry by the time we finished. I felt really sorry for the runners in heavy, clingy, soaked cotton clothes. For long runs, I always wear moisture-wicking bras (Champion are my favorites, though the black ones have this weird color transfer issue), Brooks running shorts, Nike visor or hat and a nike tank or shirt. As it gets chilly, I need to get some running tights and a long sleeved shirt, but man those things are expensive. Some are as much as $100. I’ll tell you what I finally decide on. Any suggestions? Let me know.

During this run, I had my usual 4 shot bloks as the search for the sport beans continues, drank water, not Gatorade (Gatorade and shot bloks together are a little gross I’ve discovered) and tried to focus on time, not something Steph and I usually do. But I finally (so sad I waited this long) got a sports watch and kept my eye on the time so we didn’t get too lost in conversation and let our pace suffer. We finished in a respectable 11 min/mi pace. I think that’s something I can maintain on race day, if not a bit faster.
