Evening Runs
As I'm getting a bit more focused on speed, last night's slowish 5.5 miles (57 minutes) was kind of disappointing. I was really dragging. Running after a long day at work is a challenge. You're tired, hungry, and usually the last thing I want to do is go running, especially when there's finally new TV shows on. And now that it gets dark so early, I no longer have the urge to just want to be outside like I did during the summer.
In addition to the sheer lack of motivation, I strayed from my usual pre-run snack and tried a granola bar. Never again! Not only did have an upset stomach from 3 miles on, but I think some of my sluggishness was due in part to the high fat content of a granola bar (7g and up) versus an energy bar (2g). From now on, I'm sticking to Power Bars.
Speaking of it getting so dark early, I feel I've really been neglecting my safety. I'm not a morning person and after-work runs just fit into my lifestyle better. But even when I rush out of the office, go home and change quickly, it's still dark early into my run. And though the park is well-lit, I've definitely hit patches where the lamps were out and found myself running in total darkness for up to a 1/2 mile.
I know it's stupid to run in the dark, and certainly when the lamps are out, I should have high-tailed it out of the park altogether, but I didn't. When I mentioned this to Steph she practically smacked me. For the most part, the park is filled with people, and I feel very safe, but as we all know feeling safe doesn't mean you are. I should only stick to the most heavily trafficked routes, or find a group to run with, or a new route altogether. Second, I must, must, get some clothes with reflective detailing or find something reflective I can put on my shoes or hat.
