Trent Lott, R.I.P.
Part of the news today is that Trent Lott is retiring from the Senate before January. Although his early years were distinguished by a consistently conservative record, he has been different lately--especially since losing his leadership post in connection with hi remarks at Strom Thurmond's birthday.
Another Senate Republican, like John Warner, who is not much of a loss (in his present, tired incarnation). I say that not as a leftist, but as a CONSERVATIVAE (see my AOL blog, "The Maverick Conservative", where I have suggested that, for the most part, Republicans in the Senate need to start over).
In recent months, Trent Lott has criticized conservative talk radio (inaccurately and in what amounts to a betrayal). For years, like many Senate Republicans, he has seemd to be wimpy and unable to aggressively pursue conservative advocacy.
Nope. Despite his distinguished, conservative career, I cannot mourn for the loss of Trent Lott, as he presently is (and has been for the past several years). Conservatives will be better off (at least a good chance of being better off) with someone else in the Senate from MIssissippi.
